Mb James Dean

I wish I could buy the 99...35grand is too much for a writing instrument :)

They told me that almost all of the 99 are sold...

I don't know which one I am getting...or if I am getting one at all.

At first I thought meh...but the longer I am looking at it...maybe the red one. Not sure yet.

Will keep you updated!

Yes for me it is the same, impossible to buy a MB pen under 3 digits for the quantity produced :) I saw the photo on internet and I like the limited edition but as I'm not fan of James Dean I won't buy it. And it is a good news because the wallet is not really full after the last acquisitions :) My next one will be probably the Petit Prince of 2019 to continue the series and maybe an Heritage 1912 before but not sure for this one.

I handled the LE 99 twice and it is not my cup of tea. However, I believe it will sell out quickly as it is different to other editions.

For usage it is totally impractical: no grip section, no clip and the pusher for the nib is open to dust and dirt. As I do write with my LEs this all is a no-go.

I ordered the 1931 LE pen - I believe this will be much sought for in a few years.

Thank you so much for the very kind encouragement above.

Yes the 1931 is in deed quite beautiful. The longer I look at it the more I like it. At first I thought meh. Not my cup of tea. But I dont know anything about James dean. So I am still debating with my self. Maybe a compromise a d just the special edition. Haha. My wallet is already planned for the next PoA which is coming out next year.

Always the question that interests me, is it the pen that gets people or the person that it is dedicated to ? Would you own an ugly writing instrument if the person it was representing was a life long hero of yours ? Or, spinning it the other way, if a stunning pen was released for someone you could not abide or had little interest in would that influence your buying decision ?

On a personal note it is always the pens appearance regardless of who it represents that snares me.

Same here. I bought the Hitchcock pen because I really like the design and the weight, even If I dont have a particular deep connection with Sir Alfred and its movies (which I also appreciate, but it isnt by far the first reason of my purchase).

Of course you have to like the appearance of the pen :)

But it would be a bonus if you like the pen and the person behind it :)

That's why I love my JFK so much :D

Same for me and same opinion on my JFKs :) For my Steinway 888 I don't have any particular interest in piano and music but I love the pen. So it is a bit of the two: appearance of the pen that is the more important criteria of course but the people or the subject of the pen too.

Count me as one who leans toward the nib quality and the overall look.

That being said, if Montblanc ever offered an Henri Matisse commemorative pen, I'd likely be interested no matter how it looked.

Well, I guess Forbes magazine has first dibs to talk about and show the pen. Does anyone know whether the retracting nib feature is on all the pens or just the 99 limited edition?

Only the LE 99 has this feature.

It‘s the appearance!

But I would not own a pen dedicated to a person I dislike!

Cheers

Interesting that "but I would not own a pen dedicated to a person I dislike" comment. I prefer living in my bubble of ignorance and not knowing what many of the 'dedicated people' were or what they did, cant pronounce half of the names anyway !!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Any real life pictures of this that members can share with regards to this fountain pen? I'm hesitant to order this as the shop that I'll be getting from doesn't have it and needs to order it first. Not interested with the promotional pictures coz we all know photo shop can do wonders.

Cheers...

from the pictures...which one do you prefer?

To be honest none of them but if I would have to buy one I think I would choose the special edition because I like red color and don't find something that could justify the price of the limited edition. It is one of the first time I prefer the special edition to a limited edition lol :) But I won't buy one of them. It is good for me because I won't be frustrated to not be able to buy it because too much expense this last days for computers: my iMac gave up the ghost few days after bought a new iPad Pro... the budget is not very good at the moment :)

And you are you interested to buy one of them? If yes, which one?
