Is This 146 Fake

So I won this pen in an auction (yeah already sounding like bad news) and while it seems like the other pen that I got was real (I think maybe a 144? is a cartridge pen) this one seems like a fake to me. The serial number looks to have the wrong font, although when I looked it up no other listings for a pen came up. Also, the imprinting for the nib seems too shallow, and the piston is very stiff to turn. I did put the nib to a magnet to see if it was steel but there was no response. But this is my first experience with any type of Montblanc, fake or real so I'd like a second opinion before I just sell it (ofc stating that its a fake in the listing). Thanks for your help!

Also would like to add that the converter pen came with a Montblanc branded cartridge that that is golden on the outside

The black one looks like a 146 and this model is piston filler...no cartridge/converter like 144.. Regards.

Golden cartridge usually just means that the ink has dried out, owing to age.

 

Both pens look okay, from what we can see? Although the 146 looks to have a smooth cap band? (This would be worrying, but I'm assuming it's just the photo?)

 

Can you show us the ink window, the feed and the cap band? Have you tested the pen? How does it fill and write?

It's always just an opinion, rather than a fact, when we look at photographs on the internet - but, again, I get no alarm bells from your pictures.

Whilst the 145 is heavily counterfeited, I've yet to see a burgundy fake.

 

Haven't got my 144R with me to compare, but I think I've seen various fonts used on serial numbers?

I havent inked up the pens yet, but I wanted to ask because it looked suspect to me. Also do normal standard international converters fit montblanc pens?

Not sure which pen you ate concerned about. The black pen (146) looks fine and if it is a piston, that greatly reduces odds of a fake.

I was concerned because the font of the serial number looked very different than the ones I've seen in pictures. But it seems like I didnt need to worry!

Lots of little details change over the years. Sometimes they help to date a pen to a narrower range. You would probably be surprised how many little subtle changes have taken place to the engraving of the main cap band of MB 149 pens since 1952!
