Lamy Petrol - Written Review

I tried SO hard to like this ink, and I keep wondering whether it just needs a different pen.

I have too since it was a gift. But I have tried it with many of the pens in my collection and I haven't found the right pen for the ink yet and I am not sure that I will. But because so many people enjoy this ink, I will try it again only in a very wet broad nib and see what happens. But I am just not into heavily saturated inks. I like to see the variety of color in an ink, and all I see with Petrol is very dark dark dark green.

I have a firehose of a Platinum 3776 Bourgogne, B nib...yeah, it went in there.

Wasn't pretty. :0

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Try it with a Lamy Safari/Al-Star/LX — even better with a wide nib like 1.5mm.

Coming in late here, but for those in the "if I could find the right pen for it" camp, I'll mention that for me it has performed perfectly in a Pelikan 205. In fact, upon reading this review, I picked up the pen, which had not been used in probably a month, and it wrote immediately and flawlessly. This ink definitely seems to support the cliche YMMV, but I like it a lot. Caveat: I use XF nibs exclusively, and prefer a very tight line, so I can't really speak helpfully on the wet/dry issue. It's interesting that people have called it both. We may indeed have a very pen-dependent ink here. That could be a subject for another discussion, but we do know that pen, ink, and paper all play into performance, often in surprising ways.

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I loaded the ink into my Lamy Safari Petrol with a 1.5mm nib this time, and left it in the pen for a few days. This ink just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps it is the ink formulation, but I am still not in love with the color.

Hmm.... sorry, I like the color and use it also in my Joy (= Safari or ALstar) with its 1.5 mm nib and that works great. To reiterate, the crass thing is that if I don't use it (that pen and ink) for ³ a week or 2, it still writes immediately without any fuss at all.

Ok, last recommendation—try it on Tomoe River white paper if you have any :). If you still don’t like it then, the ink is not for you indeed :)

When I did my test using the Lamy Safari with 1.5 nib, I did try it on Tomoe River and Rhodia. Yes, there was a nice bit of sheen, but I still really don't care for the ink. So, it is on to bigger and better things . . . well, different inks anyway.

But, thank you so much for all of your great suggestions! I really appreciate it! That is one of the reasons why I really enjoy FPN so much.

You and Lamy Petrol are not meant to be! I’m like that with Sailor’s Yama Dori: it’s so popular and hyped, and I was super excited to get my bottle. Then when it arrived and I inked up my pen—disappointment :( It went to someone else in the end, who was hopefully much happier with it than I was.

Interesting. Yama Dori is, for me, a much better ink. If I want a dark blue-green, I usually reach for Yama Dori. Although, truthfully, I do find Yama Dori to be too heavily saturated for my test, but it is much more pleasant than Lamy Petrol.
