HI Team

 

I have a lamy 2000 which i think is a bit too nice to keep in my pocket, Ive been using a pilot metropolitan which I like, but was hoping for something with a bit larger ink capacity... was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for something durable, pretty generous ink capacity etc. I'm a fan of a fine nib, and pens which i can post the caps on.

 

any suggestions? I was thinking of a twsbi vac 700 or 580, still curious what others think

Parker "51" meets every requirement you list and is compatible size and style. Thinner and cheaper (less than $50) for pens that are reliable, durable, write the first time, and offer the chance to change out your nibs--Parker 45 and Esterbrook J.

 

The TWSBI Vac 700 is larger pen in size and width. Additionally, you can't post the nib.

The TWSBI 580 and Eco are no go for posting. (in theory you can with the Eco, but because of its size, it would throw the balance off) The Parker 51 (both Aerometric and Vacumatic) has a pretty substantial ink capacity. The 45 can be posted, decent capacity, easy change nibs. (easily available too)

Everyone has a different idea of value and what is "expensive", but I don't feel like the Lamy 2000 should be excluded as an EDC for being too nice. It is a very durable pen that, if not abused, should last for decades. Don't let fear stop you from using your pens!

Pelikan L65s have a huge ink capacity and I think you can still find them for $30 with their own bottle of ink ($20 without, but you need the bottle because of the filling system - well, I hear you can fill them with a syringe). They are resistant to drying out and I believe airplane-safe. Mine is one of my best performing pens.

I have a TWSBI Vac700R and a Lamy 2000. As much as I love the Vac700R, I wouldn't consider it an EDC pen because of its size, lack of posting, and the material feels a little fragile. It's an awesome pen though and I use it every day.

 

The Lamy 2000 is a perfect EDC pen in my opinion. It's the most expensive pen I own yet I have no worry about it getting damaged in daily use. The macrolon is tough as nails, the nib can resist drying out because of the hooded design, it holds a large volume of ink, and it looks understated. Perfect for EDC. I say go for the Lamy 2000 and you'll enjoy every opportunity you get to pull it out of your pocket!

I agree the Lamy 2000 is a great EDC, but if you are worried about losing it there are many other pens in the world. The TWSBI 700r is on the large side. The 580 is a little large for a shirt pocket but it can work and it does hold a lot of ink.

 

To tell the truth the cartridge for a Pilot MR holds a lot of ink, the converters for that model hold about half as much. Most converters do not hold as much ink as a long cartridge (International long, Pilot, Lamy, Aurora, Parker). Just refilling cartridges can give you a lot of ink. Other then TWSBI most of piston fillers will be more expensive then your Lamy 2000.

 

Just another vote for just using the Lamy 2000...

Lamy Safari/Al-Stars and TWSBIs are great. Not necessarily my very favorite pens, but my best bets for carrying around with me. They don't leak, they're durable, not huge $$, etc. Additional consideration for me is that I live at high altitude and the up-and-down driving can make many pens leak/burp/explode; these two makes seem to be immune to that issue, which is why they're frequently with me when others (including the Pilot Metropolitans, which I really enjoy otherwise) need to stay at my desk.

+1 on the Lamy 2000. I have one inked with me at all times. If you really want a cheaper pen, I carry the TWSBI Eco. The Eco never dries out and holds a lot of ink.

If you want something similar to the Lamy 2000 but cheaper (piston fill, semi-hooded nib, clutch cap with rear clutch ring for posting, big ink capacity, great writer, robust) then pick up a vintage Aurora 88, with a bonus of style,

Parker 45 - hooded nib, takes larger Parker cartridges, and built to last. I have one example from the 60's the others are from the 70's, I believe and they work really well. The 14K fine nib is nice.

I am ever so slightly biased to vintage pens.

 

I just found out about this good Indian pen called the ASA Nauka.

 

I have never used one in real life, but it would cost you 27$ AND the pen can be tested out before it ships.

 

I dunno...

 

But the first few options I have tried and confirmed to be EXCELLENT dailies.

Thanks for all the recommendations, i really appreciate it. Im still using the lamy 2000, but to spice things up im now eyeing the twsbi eco, or even the fountain pen revolution or ASA pens. I was able to test out the eco at a local shop and it seemed to post OK on the back o ring, sadly im not able to test out one of the indian manufactured pens. If anyone has thoughts on those pens im open to suggestions!

If it's reliability you want, go with a TWSBI. I have to warn you that you cannot post any of their pens, and that the piston needs maintenance to be smooth. But they are beautiful, and any bright ink would literally shine in them on a bright day.

      @bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.

      @bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

      @bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

      What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing.       Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt.       No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

      @FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

      I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

      I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper.       Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill.
