Can We Replace The Nib Of A 51 With The Nib Of A Wing Sung 601

Brian needs a lathe...

Agreed. Very much.

But, even if I did have a lathe, it would still not be simple to retrofit the WS601 with a Parker nib/collector/feed. The problem is that the hole the nib goes through is too small on the WS601 hood, and the Parker nib will not go through it. Also, the WS601 collector is a little bit longer than the original Parker collector. It would not be easy, may not even be possible.

It would also not be possible to put the 601 collector into a P51. The 601 collector diameter is too small. You'd have to add a sleeve.

My original intention was to put original Parker nib in a 601. But honestly the WS601 nib is pretty decent.

Getting there I think.

So once Brian gets his lathe he will modify the end of the 51 barrel/connector by making and inserting a plug (I suggest a good epoxy) and then boring it out to accept the 616 collector. If he is still with us, he will then re-profile and shorten the 616 collector so that the 51 hood will pass. While PJ and FB are talking pen* Brian will be way to deep into this to back out and he will modify the 616 feed to accept a proper breather tube. A quick tune on the nib and some reassembly and we have the 333.5 ([51+616]/2).

I'm trading Brian a free pass to the SF Show for the pen since he used a Cranberry barrel set to make it.

*PJ and FB are discussing the merits of brightly colored Lucite as a viable material for a Parker pen as well as discussing alternate filling mechanisms that may or may not have been viable.

A prototype? FarmBoy, tell us please. What are the chalk marks? And what filler does it have?

  • 4 months later...

Just to add a little blasphemy. Someone took the front end of a 51 and attached it to the end part of a the 601! It's the draw filler but apparently you can use the draw filling/vacumatic end with your beloved Parker 51 nib... Please see the attached image.

The cap and section are Parker 51. The rest is 601 draw filler. He states there were not modifications done to the 51 side of the pen.

I am asking if there needed to be modifications to the 601 side of the pen and I'll update soon.

I love my Parker 51, I've also got a 601 but the nib isn't as smooth, I've done some work but not as nice so I'll commit some blasphemy :D

I wouldn't commit such a blasphemy.

MUHAHAHA :D

Sundragon, where did you see this? Was it on Facebook or Reddit?

I saw it on Instagram.

I asked and he stated: The ONLY thing that has to be modified is the WingSung's barrel. You have to wide the inner diameter of the barrel until it fits the 51's collector. Then the hood is screwed on. He used a hand file, LOL. I asked it takes a lot of work and he said it's tedious.

I mean, since the Parker 51 isn't going to be modified or damaged, it's not a huge risk aside from the cost of the WingSung and they are relatively cheap. I love the demonstrator look and the 601 takes a ton of ink. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Im pretty sure I saw it on Reddit. Not sun dragon, but I remember it.

He may have posted in multiple places, his insta is ink_consistent

Yeah that's the conclusion I came to as well. That you would have to modify one or the other. Opening the barrel hole on the Wing Sung would be one way. The other way would be to make the plug end of the 51 collector a smaller diameter.

Would making the collector smaller be easier?

Essentially the same level of effort on the lathe but you may need to make a holder for the collector.

Not sure why you would by a 51 and move the nib to a copy of a 51.

Umm I'm finding this whole 'blasphemy' thing a bit ridiculous. Do you worship pens? Well you shouldn't.

Some if us are just bantering about.

I want to watch Farmboy convince the McQueen to graft the front end of the copy onto a Buckskin barrel...

Blasphemy.

OK to use the one that was not made correctly and didn't have the jewel on the blind cap. Good way to save the parts I suppose.

Because I like the look of the demonstrator, no need to worry about inks and sacs, and I can always go back to a stock 51. If they only made nice gold nibs for the 601 Edited by sundragon
