Pelikan M120 Mini Review

I'm deliberating between this and the M605 transparent white. Does one of them have a slightly more expressive nib than the other? A lot of the recent nibs seem total nails, but the Lizard reissue I have is a joy to write with. Any hint of that with the blue M120?

The nib on the M120 should be the same as any of the M200's currently made. My M200 nibs are softer then my M800. The M600 is a slightly larger pen then the M120. You should think of the M120 as a M200/M400 with rounded ends that stick out farther then the flat ends do.

I have both pens and they couldn't be more different. The steel nib is springy with a true fine line in F; the gold M605 nib is pretty much the standard nail with a smooth tip and a medium line in F. Both write beautifully - the steel nib still has a steel feel, and the gold nib has the usual Pelikan buttery feel.

The pens look different, and feel different. The white transparent appears lighter than in photos, and feels plasticky. The blue is denser and more substantial, even though it is smaller.

I like both pens but the M120 is cuter. All this is pretty subjective - the M120 reminds me of my first Pelikan piston filler, the M100.

Thank you all! Sounds like I might be happier with the M120. I don't have many blue pens either ...

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my M120 Iconic Blue in the mail today from Cult pens and I really love the pen. It may not be in the same class as my M805, but it was really worth the money to me. I selected the B nib but it's more a M with my light touch. It's very smooth nib and works great.

Congrats! Mine was ordered from Cult pens on 4/6 and is still en route. It got held up in customs in NYC and a text update today informs me it is has now moved to a different distribution location in NYC... I don't live anywhere near NYC. I imagine mid-next week I'll get it, but of course I'll be out of town when this pen arrives, as has been par for the course for several of my acquisitions lately. I ordered an F after getting my M1000 M that feels like a BB. But I'm thinking an F is really like an F, but hopefully more like my Waterman F vs. my Pilot F.

this is a great edition - thanks for the review

I really like the shape and colour

I need to make up my mind about the gold trimming before ordering one

Like those vintage shapes!

My M120 F arrived at my doorstep yesterday 10 minutes before I had to leave for the airport. I quickly inked it up with Kon Peki Iroshizuku and found the nib to be flawless. The pen is stunning. I did not bring it with me but look forward to posting pictures this weekend when I arrive home. I also look forward to really giving it a better writing test. I'm very happy I made the buy. It is a very unique school-style pen with some nib flex. The free promotional Pelikan black and green leather case from Cult Pens works awesome with my M1000.

I keep reaching for mine. If you find Kon-Peki too wet you might switch to Robert Oster Blue Water Ice. I have been running that in my and I think it goes well with the color of the pen and love the shading. I do really like Kon-Peki so it's hard to go wrong there.

I got the all black case with mine since I don't have any green Pelikans. It works great with my m805 and even up to my MB 149. It's a bit big for the M200 sized pens but it does work. I expected it would work with an M1000 but don't own one to try it with.

Have a safe trip.

Hi Folks,

Well, I've had my blue pen from Cult for a few days. It's an EF and writes perfectly.

Anyway, really wanted the green/black and just bought a fine for $140 from MassDrop.

Regards,

nice pic, it is hard to capture the blue in this pen, it is a sort of dark cerulean blue, very nice and different.

I received mine yesterday... :)

I started on fountain pens as a boy with a 120 so I had to have this (I do have more than one vintage 120, plus the new 120 green black)

The nib is lovely as already described, and I do think this is a big plus on Pelikan steel nibs (and one of the reasons why I am also very fond of M200s).

The new 120 is slightly longer than the vintage 120 which is another feature I like.

I got mine with a discount from a German guy who was selling it.

The story is quite nice, I asked him why he was selling a new pen (the pen is new, uninked, still wrapped in its gift box)...

He told me he is fond of 120s, a bit like me he has vintage and also the new green black and wanted this badly, so as soon as out he bought it!

Few days later his wife gifts him with...a 120 Iconic Blue for his birthday!

"She knows nothing about this one, and...I'm keeping her's, of course... that's why I'm selling this one!" he said :D

So other than the nib artwork, is this the exact nib as the M200? I've read they are the same and I've read this one has more flex. Which is it?

Seems like the same about of flex on my m120(B) as my m200 (M) and m215 (F).

well yes, but it did puzzle me at first why he was selling a brand new just out pen... so I asked him!

the story sounded good enough for me! :)

ref. flex, I cannot feel a difference in springiness (can't call it flex really) vs other M200 nibs.

By the way, I also have a B nib on it. I really like the Pelikan steel B nibs, they tend to be more usable that the Pelikan gold B nibs which tend to write a little too wide for everyday use. The steel B nibs are a tad finer, as Driften mentioned, and can be used even for note taking if you write light/fast enough and are ever so smooth.

I'm finally back at home with my new M120 Iconic Blue and promotional beautiful leather case from my Cult Pens order. Both really are awesome. A very good deal. The case is absolutely perfect for my M1000. I think Kon-Peki Iroshizuku ink is also perfect for this pen. A nice wet line. This steel nib Fine is very similar to my Waterman Carene Fine in width... a true Western Fine.

Mine is with M nib, in use already for ten days - and I seriously like it! The pen and the nib.

Not sure if I am just imagining, but this nib seems just a tad softer than on other (few....) M200 I have.

Heart stopping nib, great shot. Doesn't seem like the new clear m205 has that design.
