Converting A Metal Body Fp To An Eye-Dropper Pen Advisable ?

As I have a few spare Baoer 388 to play around with (i.e. less than 3 .$ US a pop on ebay :D ) , I am planning to convert it to an eye-dropper pen . The reason is simple enough : the Baoer has pronounced matching lips between the grip section and the pen body . It is quite easy to fit an O-ring in between . I am curious to know if it's safe to allow direct contact between the metal pen body and ink in the long run ? I have seen many eye-dropper pens with plastic or non-metal pen body and wonder if ink corrosion might be the case in metal fountain pen ? Please advise and comment . Thanks

There is certainly that possibility, depending on the ink chemistry and the metal the body is made of.

Also a chance that the friction-fit of the band to the body might not be completely waterproof.

I say try it, though. :D What do you have to lose?

I use Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink . As for leaking, I can put some grease on the thread as an additional measure..No big problem here . Thanks .

I hate to curb your enthusiasm, but ink on metal is bad juju. :D

 

Seriously, it is. All fountain inks are either acid, alkaline or alcohol based, (listed in order of commonality); all of these solvents WILL corrode metals over time... some will take longer than others, but eventually the pen will seize shut from corrosion.

 

Metal threads are poorly suited for the conversion to begin with, the threading is so sharp and smooth, it's difficult to get a water-tight seal. That's why you generally don't see metal on metal screw-cap vessels that contain liquids. ;)

 

Be well and enjoy life... but do it in a slightly different way. :D

...if you want to make like Mr. Wizard and give it a go... go ahead,... but I'd do it in an extremely well controlled environment. ;)

Maybe the metal body will transmit the heat of your hands to the ink, and the pen will tend to burp.

With Silicone grease + O-ring, the leakage problem is considered solved , I think . I am inclined now to be more concerned about the corrosiive effects of the metal thread @ the Grip section & pen body , which might eventually lead to the seizure of this junction in the long run ...(accoding to ParkerDuofold's doom prediction )

. How's about some Silicone grease ( or even motor grease for that matter ... :D ) applied to the thread for corrosion protection ? :wacko:
