My 400N arrived and it is nice. Not a pen that I planned to add now, but I couldn't pass on it at the price I got.

Flock of torts? More like a herd of turtles, yes? Semitics aside, I always love seeing a collection of tortoise writing instruments.

We learned all about the dreaded flock of torts in my first year of law school. Edited by Mister5

Thank you, BillH!

The nib is about as much fun as a Fine can be  !

Seriously, though, it is a very nice nib.

How does it write with Pelikan ink?

(Is it better than Lamy ink? I am wondering if I should find a bottle for my 140...)

After a year of saving up, I ordered a Pelikan M600 Blue Striped Extra Fine, and it arrived today. I've been tempted to get an M800 because I like its weight, but I'm an inveterate poster and don't need a baseball bat. This strikes the right balance of bling and conservatism - I'd say this my "statesman" pen. The Extra Fine yields a line like a Japanese Fine Medium nib but very smooth. The F & EF nibs on the M200 & M215 have more feedback (which I prefer).

I also got a few inks in the order:

Pelikan 4001 Blue Black - Prefer Tanzanite

Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown - haven't tried it out yet

Pelikan 4001 Dark Green - This is far too cheerful to be a "dark" green. As a sober, boring person, I don't like this. I imagine this would be a good replacement for Xanax when consumed as diagnosed by your physician.

Platinum Citrus Black - Goes down like highlighter yellow but darkens considerably to a gold-green. I'd have to add something to make this more visible when I first put the ink down on paper. Interesting but not practical, though I like the final color. I'll have to get Alt Goldgrun.

Right now I have the M600 inked up with the driest ink I have, Diamine Registrar's Blue Black. At first blush it this is pretty close to the Pelikan Blue Black but I think DRBB will darken over multiple days based on past experience.

The pen writes very well with the 4001 Brown. It gives a really fine line, with moderate flow.

I tend to like most of the 4001 and Edelstein inks and they all seem to play well with my "birds". So, I highly recommend them for your 140.

As for comparing the Pelikan inks with Lamy inks, I cannot say much, since I only have one Lamy (blue), and it must be almost 2 years since I last used it. I didn't really like that one, because it was way too dry (even my Lamy 2000 complained and didn't write well with it).

How do you find your Pendleton BLS grind? Is it smoother than before it was ground or how would you compare it to other stubs? Thinking of getting a Pendleton grind myself but can't find much info

I have perhaps half a dozen Pendleton Brown ground nibs. Every modern Pelikan pen I acquire travels first to PB. They come back very smooth, with gorgeous line variation. All of them were very smooth and wrote beautifully when i got them, but I love line variation. I have recommended PB's work in many posts. My experience says you will love a PB grind.

This made me laugh. Green ink and 'a sober, boring person' do not generally show up in the same sentence. Have you never heard of the 'green ink brigade'? We are known as ravers.

I actually use Lamy Blue...

Is it drier than Pelikan?

My red-striped M400 arrived today from its trip back to Florida, where the seller did a comp nib exchange for me. I guess this might be considered a new addition for 2018, as I only looked at it admiringly a few times between its arrival in December and sending it off for the exchange.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Got back my M400 Brown Tortoise last night, back from repairs to the piston seal. It's now working much better and is newly inked up with De Atramentis Van Dyck Brown (although that may be too wet an ink for the very juicy F nib...).

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
