Qotw - 2018

QOTW for 2 April, 2018:

Do not hurry at the beginning. Understand what your are doing, or you are only wasting time.

Lloyd Reynolds, "Italic Calligraphy & Handwriting: Exercises & Text," 1969.

This seems like good advice for the acquisition of any new skill, but, of course, Reynolds was speaking of how to use his instructional materials.

Enjoy!

Rats! I see you have already posted David.

Sorry, but I have been struggling to find how to post pictures here now that Photobucket has changed. It is ridiculous how much one has to wade through to get a simple answer!!!

Please excuse me if I misunderstand your misunderstanding. The "rules of play" as set out in the OP are that the first person to offer a calligraphic rendition of each weeks quotation is to post the following week's QOTW.

Happy writing!

David

Since pictures weren't helping me much, I found videos of people writing the italic script. Seeing the motions and the letters as they were formed helped greatly in my opinion.

I think I understand a bit better what Randal said, about the quick, abrupt nature of this script. After practicing the alphabet and the quote three times, this is what I've managed to lay down.

I've enjoyed practicing the proper motions more than I thought I would.

@RoyalBlueNotebooks: Great improvement in your Formal Italic! It's fun, isn't it? Here are three different styles for contrast:

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

From Google Translate:

An original woman is not the one who does not imitate anyone, but the one that NO ONE can imitate. -- Marie Felix

First time in a long time that I have attempted Rotunda, seemed to fit this quote. Yes, I need to practice a lot.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

Maria Felix (de Los Angeles Felix Guerena):

The quote is not straightforward and we can argue with it, but this is a high cinematography, high fashion and high arts :)

I like writing in Italic though progress is slow.

I'm nothing but stubborn persistent.
