Nice! ...two celluloid 149 additions :)

What are the ink feeds, ink windows and imprints like? I have found those to indicate 1st or 2nd generation pens.

18C nibs are most likely export models.

Cheers

Michael

Hello Michael. For my new 149 the pen has the later full grove face and shank feed used until the early 1960s. The ink window is the shorter kind that is covered by the cap when closed. The piston knob is only embossed with the model number and not the nib size. The piston head is the polymer type. alos, i think the older models are where you are likely to see the green striated celluloid leftovers used in the 149 where it would not show.

I would expect an earlier 149 to have a ski slop feed, and ink window that extends past the cap a few MM, a cork piston head, a nib width imprint, and most likely Masterpiece on the cap band. The aerliest 149s will also have a L139 nib. (Still waiting to get a hold of one of those in a 149!)

Those seem to be the two sets of characteristics that set apart the eras. Of course there are likely times where there is overlap. I had a pen with all the earlier characteristics except the piston head was the polymer. Maybe it was a later service replacement? Hard to know at this point.

Sounds reasonable ... 2nd generation celluloid pen!

Also imprint size on the filling knob was done in larger fonts on early ones. Also 149G was used.

Not sure about cork vs. polymer; could be a replacement.

I will check about the additional imprint on the cap. Not all pens have it...

Cheers

I was very surprised to see it too. I think the star is celluloid, but it appears more like a casein star in terms of the damage from age. That is one of the reasons I added the picture. It is not too noticeable with the naked eye but obvious with magnification.

I have seen imprints mostly on the body on earlier pens and caps later in production. I have certainly seed French imprints and I think Italian too for the made in Germany.

Montblanc 14 with 18K OB nib arrived today. Did my usual flushing routine and it broke (see other post). This sure ain't the way I wanted to show off my new pen!

It's funny how time can change one's perspective on such things. If I had gotten that pen new in 1960 and took it apart and found I had left over scrap celluloid instead of nice, new black celluloid, I would probably have been upset at having a sub-par pen. Last weekend, the use of that scrap celluloid was one of the selling points of the pen for me. :D

Hello Tom. Crazed refers to a network of fine cracks on a surface. Your estimate of cracked and glazed is well on the right path as crazed is often used referring to ceramics where the network of fine cracks is in the glaze on the surface.

Thank you so much for the explanation!

Murphy has tilted events in his favor this last week so I've had only minutes here and there to peek into the forum. However, I do want to announce the arrival of:

  • 4 weeks later...

Purchased a second Homer with an OBB nib. Still haven't inked the fine nib I have at home but the OBB was calling out to me. Planning on inking the new one with Shakespeare velvet red this weekend. Figured it would match the pen theme.

I just recently got back into Montblanc collecting after I had a strong desire to replace a sentimental pen (Montblanc 114 Solitaire Cap) I got rid of years ago. In the past two weeks I've learned a ton about different models, sizes, inks, etc. thanks to this forum and other online research. I'll start with a picture of my current collection that I've had for quite a few years, with minimal knowledge besides I loved the white snow cap on top. Two starwalkers, a Meisterstuck pencil, another pencil not sure of model, and the Meisterstuck rollerball on the left I'm not sure of the model #.

The other two pictures are of the two I received in the past few days. The 149 came today and it's incredible. The other is a 144 Solitaire I believe that I got a wonderful deal on.

I have a 145 and 146 both arriving on Friday. I also have this 114 pictured en route from Germany which is the exact model I had prior and a family member was incredibly generous to offer to replace it for me.

I've spent ton's of time on this forum in the past week or so and have been having a ton of fun learning about models and adding to my collection. I hope to acquire a 142 or 342, and a 147 in the near future to round out my collection so I can relax and enjoy using these pens! I'll update with pictures of the 145 and 146 on Friday.

Compared to all the skeletons and specials in this thread, this is a pretty humble offering:

fpn_1538088766__334_-_1.jpg

...but, I've been after this part for years and am delighted to have finally got my hands on one.

It's a 334½ barrel, which means I can finally get my beloved pen back into the rotation!

It needs a good clean up and I'll probably swap out the piston and knob, but it's solid and functional.

Typical of the spares market, it cost me more than I paid for the pen, but I don't begrudge a penny of it - and at this very moment, I wouldn't swap it for a new skeleton with a BB nib.

Thanks.

A treasure does not need to be gold, silver, or covered in gems to be precious. I am glad to hear it brings a beloved pen back to life. Congratulations.

These beautiful writing instruments finally arrived :)

Very thankful and grateful to be able to own these spectacular fountain pens.

Now the wait begins for the Ludwig 4810 and Steinway 4810.
