Enjoying Montblanc Pens — Broad, Oblique, Extra Fine, Le & Bespoke 2019

Recommended Posts

After having cleaned and stored my 1912, i had been using a 146 90th ann as my daily/ pocket pen.

Yesterday i was looking the pens, and despite how annoying it is to clean up the 1912 to change inks, i just had to ink it up again! Its such a comfortable and nice writer!! Plus the size is perfect for my pockets.

Now i have to lean the 146.. lol

I love the nib shot with ink spots, absolutely beautiful! All the shots are beautiful as well. But something about a nib with ink spots is just beautiful.

Well, it took more time than expected, but I finally got all of the pens I ordered/was getting.

None of them is a Montblanc, but all of them have nibs outside of the normal range (F,M,B ).

In order of appearance:

TWSBI 580 Clear, EF nib, inked with Montblanc Psychedelic Purple

Conklin Duragraph Orange Nights, Omniflex nib, inked with Diamine Oxblood

Lamy 27, OBB nib, inked with Montblanc Royal Blue

Conklin Endura Mahogany, 1.1 stub nib, inked with Lamy Amazonite

Two pens with normal nibs I threw in because they are recent aquisitions of mine I thought they deserved some screen time as well:

Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age Oversize, F nib, inked with Montblanc Irish Green

Lamy all black, B nib, inked with J. Herbin Perle Noire

The Lamy is very special to me because it belonged to my grandfather, who isn't writing with it anymore so he gave it to me because he thought I might enjoy it.

This is one of the most captivating photos I have seen! This should be on Montblanc's website! I love it!

I had the same feeling but I saw in his profile that he connects time to time on the forum so I suppose everything is fine for him, just nothing to post. I hope I'm right. His last connection is from yesterday.

I asked myself the same question and hope that everything is fine. At same time, we know that the Internet access in his country of residence could be sometimes restricted.

Oh, it was for the Copernicus eh? Is this like when men buy lingerie for women as a gift? ;)

1965 Montblanc 149 18C Oblique Fine (OF) Nib

~ Over the years I read about field naturalists of the early 20th Century who made field sketches of geology, weather, plants and animals using oblique fine (OF) nibs.

They weren't fountain pen or pen & ink enthusiasts, but rather were specialists in observation of nature, using sketches to emphasize features of interests, as opposed to photographs.

The predilection for OF nibs among naturalists was widespread, due to the facility of sketching, the fine lines, and wider strokes possible due the flexible OF nibs of that time.

As my professional career concerns field ecology, there is ample opportunity for rapid sketching of landscape features, as well as the botanical life and any wildlife observed.

It was my good fortune to acquire three OF nib pens: 1. 1950s Pelikan 400 OF 2. 1967 Montblanc 24 OF 3. 1950s Montblanc 342 OF

All three of them are superb writers, well-suited for both sketching and handwriting. Their high quality caused me to wonder if a 149 OF nib pen might be obtained.

Two years ago I discussed the possibility of a Bespoke 149 OF, but was persuaded to order a Bespoke Sketch Nib, which has been highly satisfactory.

Gradually I learned that a few 149 Oblique Fine nibs had been made over half a century ago, but were relatively scarce.

In late 2018 a 149 OF nib pen was brought to my attention. In outstanding condition, it was what I'd been seeking for nearly ten years.

Due to intense interference by customs staff in the area where I work, the pen was delayed for many months after it was purchased.

When it arrived early this afternoon, it was apparent that the pen was unharmed by its long, time-consuming journey.

The 18C nib offers excellent feedback, as well as considerable flexibility with the slightest finger pressure.

The piston knob is one of the best I've ever felt. The OF nib tip doesn't skip, starts right away, affording a smooth writing experience.

It's especially pleasing that a series of rapid sketches where ink was rapidly flowing never once had any temporary lapses of ink flow.

All in all a most welcome addition to my writing desk, which will see heavy use in 2019 and beyond.

The pen has been inked in Fritz Schimpf Gewitterwolke, ‘Stormy Blue’, which flows well in the OF nib.

This is the tenth 149 on my writing desk.

It may be worth noting that in a separate shipment of Pelikan products received today, a note was written to me with a prototype Montblanc Expression Nib.

While I've had no plans for any new fountain pens in 2019, the prototype Expression Nib handwritten note may cause me to reconsider.

What a gorgeous pen! And that nib is stunning. Worth the wait I'm sure. And those ins are very nice too... hmmm...
