I've always found the chubby section of that Sheaffer model adorable.

Tas, correct me if I'm wrong, did you add a bottle of Sailor Seiboku or Souboku into your profile icon??

Adorable is the word. Thank you, and yes, a keen eye you have RoyalBlueNotebooks B)

Souboku has, in just a short space of time, taken over Akkerman #10 as my favourite writing ink. Thought I'd update my avatar to reflect that :)

Nice, I use a Kaigelu 382, which is similar (Sonnet like), it's one of my favourite Chinese pens, surprisingly it's very reliable.

In reality I think it's the morning light I took the photo in that gives a bluish shade to the lined pattern, which is grey.

Nice writing btw.

One of my favorite combinations: Wing Sung 698 with a Pilot Pluminix F nib (and Pilot feed), and Diamine Steel Blue.

Today I am using a near-mint Shaffer Valiant TD TM from 1950-51. Sheaffer made these for about a year before they were replaced by the Snorkel. This one has a 14K fine/medium nib depending on the ink and paper used, and writes like a dream.

Tas: I wrote "conical", but what I meant was "inlaid". Doesn't change the level of my curiosity in the least.

Pen below: Graf von Faber-Castell guilloche in Sahara yellow. Ink is Sailor Jentle purple-blue -- some Japanese colour name I can't read, because I studied Japanese more than thirty years ago and probably didn't know the words even then.

Nice pen Houston, Waterman made the Night and Day in black, black and gold and black striped. Then they also made a platinum striped version which is really nice.

There is a great review here on FPN by DanceOfLight

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/300126-waterman-exception-night-day-with-platinum-stripes/

I got mine somewhat fortunately, as a pen collector friend sold off some of his Watermans a few years ago, and I bought it from him practically new at a good price.

Houston, you're right, that Montblanc is certainly similar to the Pelikan MK10. The design looks certainly outdated but I like how my MK10 writes, super-wet to the point of leaking, and I like it's balance a lot too.

I have tiny hands, so I don't mind it's slim body.

That GvFC is stunning, never seen that colors in pictures online. The ink is probably Sailor Shigure, it's written with the Kanji of "time" and "rain" and it indicates the rain period in late autumn/early winter. Don't worry, I studied Japanese until 4 years ago and I'm forgetting so much so quickly it's quite scary.

Love the yellow GvFC - stunning pens and masterful nibs.

Found on ebay a used, vintage Pelikano. Price was under budget, so I bid, and luckily I won.

Consulting the page Pelikan-collectibles, I discovered that this is the P450 but the cap must be that of the P451 for lefties because it's not red as the rest of the pen.

The nib is very smooth, the A is less wide than the L of my other Pelikano. The ink flow consistent, although less generous than its younger sibling.

The balance is very good, he cap seals and posts well, but the grip is a tad narrow and I often remind myself to relax my grip on it.

Also the grip is adorned with ridges that theoretically help you find the correct tripod position without actually forcing your fingers into the position like with the new Pelikano, but the orientation of the ridges is weird, they stop directly underneath the center of the nib, but if you rest your index finger there you're rotating the nib too much. Weird.

TAS: I hope you don't mind but, based on your Sheaffer Intrigue and your post, I asked my questions over in the Sheaffer forum. Some helpful information has already been offered, and more may come. The thread is here.

RoyalBlueNotebooks: I *love* that pen. The ink window on a cartridge pen is particularly cute. I have one in blue and one in red. And I think I once had one in black that I gave away at some point, trying to recruit a friend to the FP fetish. Both my red and black examples have the same brushed stainless cap that yours has. I don't know what the significance of that is, but I can tell you I bought each of them new, in a blister pack, back in the day. I had never noticed, before, however, until seeing your great photos, that one of my nibs is gold-toned, and the other is bare stainless. No idea why. My blue one has the same clip as yours, but my red one has a clip about a centimetre shorter.

Also, different from yours, is the imprint of the nib size. Neither of mine have that large, prominent imprint on the nib. Indeed, only one of mine has a nib size indication at all, and it's "M". The other bears no marking on the nib other than the logo. I wonder if (indeed speculate that) mine were made for export outside Europe -- where I lived and bought all my pens until relatively recently -- whereas yours may have been meant for German/European distribution. I don't know why I find it interesting -- but I do -- that there would be so many tiny design/manufacturing variations on such a simple, low-end product.

Ha! I was wrong! I just found my black one, and it's different, again! ...like my blue one and your red one, but with a black cap, rather than the bare brushed stainless. Thanks for sending me down the rabbit hole on this one, RoyalBlueNotebooks.

I once wrote a 40-page letter with one of these, and recall being completely seduced by the value-for-money flawless performance of the pen. Love that.

BTW, RoyalBlueNotebooks: I admire that Verdigris ink, and it's now my turn to compliment you on your fine handwriting.

Houston, I'm so glad I sent you down the rabbit hole and induced you to "rediscover" your Pelikano. They're neat little pens!

The differences in plating, cap color, clip length etcetera simply mark different productions. Every few years or so Pelikan changes something.

You can find all the different Pelikano versions, chronologically, here:

Today and yesterdays usage in one post.

Had my Fine nibbed godron inked up all week that was not working no matter what I tried, went to go and try some fixes and it wrote without issue. I'm glad because the nib is super smooth.

Second pen I wrote some notes up with is the Jinhao 1200 in the black and gold color. It's a bit heavy for a session writer, but it's a fun novelty pen that's actually not a bad writer. I've had it about six months and has held up pretty well. It has a medium nib.
