Papier Plume - Moss Green

Intensity

Recommended Posts

Papier Plume inks caught my eye when I saw them discussed here on FPN. I was intrigued by their colors as well as good water resistance (an important to me property of an ink).

Recently my significant other was on a business trip to New Orleans and kindly purchased a three bottles of Papier Plume inks for me that I asked for (as well as a surprise extra bottle!) So far all four inks have exceeded my expectations.

Moss Green was the ink I was most interested in trying. I really like Rohrer & Klingner's Alt Goldgrun with a dip pen, but unfortunately in my fountain pens it looks quite pale. And it also lacks any water resistance to speak of. Moss green, on the contrary, is easily legible and has excellent water resistance. Double plus. Despite my camera picking up the two colors so differently, they are actually quite close together in person. I've had to do some color-tweaking in post processing to try to get the inks to look like what I see with my eyes. Papier Plume is just a bit darker and "murkier" than Alt Goldgrun, but the murky addition of gray bit makes it more readable. I really like its shading and general behavior. Overall it's a great ink that I highly recommend to anyone who likes this kind of olive greens and cares about water resistance.

While I noted that the consistency is a bit "runny", there have been no feathering issues with this ink.

Nice review. I like the colour a lot and it flows well, but I didn't find it special enough to consider the shipping costs worth paying. If they get a UK supplier I might get another bottle.

For me, the water resistance (and the color) make it special. And of course in the US it sells for a great price.

My kind of green! Not sure though if it will be too light with fine nibs. What size nib did you use for the writing sample?

It's a medium cursive italic, dry-writing Nakaya. If your Fine pen is a dry writer, it will be as light as you see. If it puts down a wet line, your result will be darker than my example. I.e. see the difference between dip pen and the fountain pen writing. It's much more legible compared to Alt Goldgrun.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
