Lamy 2018 Special Edition Colours Leaked

It's definitely possible to have a gradient of anodizing dyes, as well as "splatter" effects, masked off areas, etc. It would be a more time consuming process and would result in a higher end price.

Hi all,

Before this thread completely disintegrates and implodes... I suggest we take a page from the Mont Blanc thread and talk about fedora hats, cars, pianos or tube amps to relieve the rising tensions.

I'll start: I wish Borsalino would come out with a fedora in either of last year's LE colors: Petrol or Pacific Blue.

Be well all. :)

Hi Antony

Thank you for relaxing. It seems rather difficult to discuss colors of pens which do not exist in real life yet, specially with people who are not that interested in the original topic (Lamy 2018 Special Edition Colours Leaked) and the serious discussion of issues related to the OT.

(... but this is nothing new and just my frustrated comment, so please ignore).
I still bellieve that the matte all black will be a quite cool color as soon as I hold it in my hands - a stealth Safari so to speak.

Everyone knows that the AL-Star is made out of aluminum.

Dip n Scratch didn't say to "make it out of" heat-colored steel, he said to make a model that "looks like" heat-colored steel.

No way!

It wouldn't do the pen's design good. Period.

Do you mean "cool" as in color tone, or "cool" as in "hip/neat/rad/[jargon of your choice]" aesthetics?

Because in the photo of the Charcoal pen with the black ended Vista pencil, there was clearly a difference in color and tone. The Charcoal (while, as said, not "brown" tinged) was still a much warmer tone than the color of the pencil, which had (at least on my screen) almost a blue undertone to it -- it was a much colder color. And yeah, I concur with what other people have said: they were clearly different.

That being said, I'm still of the camp of "ho hum, another black pen... ZZZZZZ...." The Pink Al-Star? As I said previously, I'll wait to see what it looks like in person, not on a photo or scan on my laptop. I had considered getting a Pink Safari (not Coral) a couple of years ago (once I decided that I *could* get used to the triangular grip), on the grounds of "Well, I might as well go all out and be silly...." And then when I saw them I decided "Maybe not...." But I jumped in without hesitation on the Dark Lilac (especially after seeing a photo of the side by side with the purple Al-Star).

Actually, I meant with "cool"; desirable, hip, fashionable etc...

Think of all the matte black stealth editions of the past years, from Montblanc, Sailor, Pilot (Capless) and others. Of course, the Idea is not new, but this doesn't mean that it's bad. Right?

And yes, colors are a matter of personal taste, but I am sure there are lots of black pen lovers out there.

I do not collect the Safaris, just the AL-Stars. But the all black one definitely has me tempted for a carry-around pen. As I like everything that is black.

Hi C.,

You're welcome. :)

Well, it's just the common foibles of our inherent weak nature. :D

I know what you mean about the black one,... but the "stealth look" is starting to get a little long in the tooth, (IMHO),... I just wish Lamy would be a little more imaginative or "dynamic," but I guess they have to sell, too. :)

That said, ANYTHING is an improvement over the neon yellow of a few years back. :D You never can tell,... once I see the "black" one in person,... it might knock my socks off.

BTW: The Borsalino company went bankrupt, sadly: https://www.reuters.com/article/italy-borsalino-court/italian-hat-maker-borsalino-faces-liquidation-after-court-decision-idUSL8N1OI396

:crybaby:

This IS heartbreaking news... I just bought another one of their fedoras from Stark & Legum about 3-4 months ago. Now that they've gone under, it's probably going to drive the prices way up... like Omas. :(

I love the idea of a matte burgundy or is it Bordeaux Safari, same with a matte fir green, deep dark cool green.

Very exited about the new pink!

Would it be possible to get a picture of the Studio Racing Green which is truer to life? It looks dull while the Pacific is vibrant.

Does Lamy plans to offer BB nibs worldwide, any time soon, I know they were available for gold nibs in Germany?

Racing Green is a muted dark color. The upcoming Al-Star pink is, well, vibrant. And likewise with Pacific Al-Star. There are anodizing dyes that give an almost fluorescent glowing bright color.

The bright pink is the perfect color for me to provide gifts for friends who happen to be cancer survivors who have, at one time or another, expressed interest in my fountain pens.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my Vibrant Pink Al-star last Friday with a bottle of ink and some cartridges. Very nice colour actually.

Not that I'm a huge fan of Lamy or collect all their special editions but... there's already 2 black Safaris on the market so why on earth have a 3rd? It looks almost the same as my charcoal one and there's also a shiny black model. I just ask - why?! Surely there's a more interesting colour out there. Will people pay extra for a special edition of a colour that's already available? Why not even make the nib black, as they do black nibs? Really confused. Don't see any incentive for buying this pen unless you're a collector who MUST have every special edition.

What's so confusing? The Safari Black is glossy. The Umbra isn't black. Some people like the matte finish of the Umbra and they like the color black. So, black, matte pen as special edition. Why do people order the Kaweco AL-Sport "Night" edition as there is a black Sport? Also confusing?

I would say that subject has been chewed out by now.

Let's wait and see the actual pens as they hit the stores.

Has anyone seen the Safari in stores yet?

I don't recall, but is there a lag time, typically, between the release of the Al-Stars and the Safaris (ie: how long can we expect to wait anxiously, now that the first one has hit the streets)?

Historically at least I don't believe the yearly special edition colours are priced any higher than the regular colours. Actually, I'll remove the uncertainty from that statement ... I *know* they haven't been priced higher otherwise I wouldn't have some of them in my collection.

However, two or three years down the road as it gets difficult to find a retailer with any remaining stock, a popular yearly colour may command a premium on the used market.

The Safari will come later. The AL-Star will be out on the 5th of February.

Is the ink also supposed to be out on Feb. 5? Not sure how some people here already have theirs (unless they are reviewers).
