I looked at the matte black Safari (Umbra/Charcoal) yesterday at the Lamy boutique store in San Francisco. And as has been discussed here, it is actually a very dark brown that is close to black but not truly black. (I thought about taking photos, but not sure the color reproduction would really capture the true hue).

But, Lamy definitely has room to make a matte Safari that is blacker than the Umbra/Charcoal.

I don't understand why you must be so cold.

I am being scientific. I am looking for proof.

So far we have (strong) opinions about the "color" of "Charcoal" and one person insisting that their opinion is "right" others are "wrong".

You still confuse opinions with knowlege.

Knowledge comes from facts.

Where are the documented facts? Test reports? Material specifications?

fitz123, a deep red burgundy one sounds lovely. I'd buy that, definitely.

Oh, yes, please. It could be my forever favourite.

When Lamy introduced the Charcoal in 1984, they called it "Umbra" for the German market. Charcoal is the designation for the international market and I don't know when it was introduced.

And Umbra is a German term for a color range of dark brown earthy color shades.

Of course, the charcoal is not really brown. I would rather call it a warm black, and the term charcoal is probably much closer to the real color than the term Umbra. But if you compare your charcoal with a true black pen in daylight, you will see that the charcoal is a tint warmer than the black one.

Today, I took a picture of a Lamy Safari pencil in Umbra and a Vista pencil (which has a black matte pushknob) side by side. I think it can be said that at least there is a difference between the two, although I never would call the Umbra brown color.

...and yes, this makes me a little bit exited and I am looking forward to the 2018 Safari. Until now I thought it couldn't get better than the umbra.... but maybe it could indeed!

One may need an eye transplant or at least a new screen if he or she can't see the difference.

All I know is they could have launches one other Color rather than all black..

Right, that's what I don't get: why make all-black a "special edition". It's a complete standard color for pretty much everything else, so making it a special edition is boring.

I also believe that the all black should be a standard color, but for now i will be getting one as a special édition if that's what it takes.

You know what would be nice for a special edition? Something you can eye dropper.

I know there's a hack with the Vista, which originally comes with a superfluous ink window :glare:, but it would be nice.

I had entered into a transaction for a charcoal black Safari, which I fancied. This would be the Umbria. So what is 'special about another black Safari when there are two in the standard range?

I have actually bought a neon lime Safari. The Writing Desk were offering it with a EF nib, which seem difficult to get. So I bought one. The Pink is also part of the current Safari offerings.

I could have got a Safari at my local W H Smith, but not the nib I wanted.

Neon lime, & pink aren't to everybody's taste.

The all-white Joy I do like. Now that is special. It reminds me of a dip pen, being elongated & tapering like that.

I don't see these so-called 'special' offerings on the Lamy Sweden site.

If they wanted to do something special: What about an Al-Star that looks like a bar of heat-coloured steel?

It's aluminium.

Everyone knows that the AL-Star is made out of aluminum.

Dip n Scratch didn't say to "make it out of" heat-colored steel, he said to make a model that "looks like" heat-colored steel.

Hi all,

Before this thread completely disintegrates and implodes... I suggest we take a page from the Mont Blanc thread and talk about fedora hats, cars, pianos or tube amps to relieve the rising tensions.

I'll start: I wish Borsalino would come out with a fedora in either of last year's LE colors: Petrol or Pacific Blue.

Be well all. :)

I did say "looks like" in relation to my idea for an exceptionally special Al-Star.

The section of the pen is dark as if it were the end of a fire poker. So why not have the cap and barrel with anodising or a painted finish suggestive of heat-coloured steel? Blue changing through to orange-yellow.

Now, that could potentially be a seriously limited edition.

I don't know what sort of production total would apply to any year special colour as in the Safari.
