So, the Umbra is indeed the oldest colour still made today. Now that is a surprise!

Thanks Christof, for some reason I thought it was blue.

Hi Sciumbasci, et al,

Me, too.

I thought the oldest colors were going to be the primary colors... red, blue and yellow... and they're actually some of the newest. :headsmack:

P.S.: Thank you Christof, for all the Lamy info. :)

I had thought the black safari was one of the oldest colours available.

Out of curiosity, anyone knows what is the oldest colour still made today for this pen?

I knew that the Charcoal/Umbra was the oldest in current production, but what I did not was aware of was the time lapse between the debut of the Safari in Green, textured finish, and the Light Gray, textured finish, all with black trimmings, just before the introduction of the first 'limited edition' Safari, the Flame (orange): TWENTY ONE YEARS!

Amazing what marketing and customer oriented products have made to the willingness of designers and manufacturers...

Thank you!

Hi Pajaro,

I know it would negate their L.E. status, but this not uncommon for Lamy; who seem to use L.E. colors as gauges.

The pink and apple green Safari's, as well as the black and blue-green Al-Stars, started out as L.E.'s and are now standard range colors. I imagine the same can be done for inks.

It will be,... if they're smart. ;)

- Anthony

P.S.: I had long hoped the aquamarine Safari would also join the standard catalog... alas,... :( ...it hasn't as of yet.

We are talking inks here, not pens.

Hi Dick,

Yes. I know, that's why I said: "I imagine the same can be done for inks."

For a pen it would indeed negate the LE status.

True. But Lamy even managed to work around this by making minor changes, e.g., the L.E. model will come with color-keyed finials; whereas the standard issue will have the standard black.

If all else fails... the paper label on the box indicates "L.E." :D

But ink is a consumer product.

Yes. Ink is a consumable product, but I really don't see what that has to do with anything.

Many companies release L.E. inks... as well as L.E. pens,... but when we study Lamy's track record... such as what they've done with some of their LE pen colors in the past,... I do not see why the same practice cannot be carried over to their inks.

There was zero difference between Lamy Pacific Blue and Lamy Turquoise... except for the packaging. Lamy could re-release Dk. Lilac or Petrol the same way... or if they want to be real purists about it, (which they were not with some of their L.E. pens, such as the blue-green Al-Star),... they could make a very minor tweek to the ink.

Unless somebody has been sitting on 200 bottles of LE ink, hoping to sell them at ridiculous prices, in which case I would LOVE the fact they were made part of the regular lineup. Hoarding large numbers of a scarce commodity, denying them to many fans, only to make a profit later is criminal, in my opinion.

Well, that sure isn't me... I didn't get any Lilac and I only got two packs of cartridges of the Petrol.

But hoarding is really up to the retailer's to control... by setting purchase limits on sales, but many do not; either because they're looking for a fast buck, too, or their website software is too primitive to handle such restrictions.

Oh, well, such is life. Be well. :)

Nice chronological overview! The clip on my red Safari is silver (not black like the 1989 version). Does anyone know when Lamy switched to silver color?

1989 red with Black was my first Safari.

Briefly per the photo documentary in Christof's link above,

2001 Black clip textured gray Griso.

2004 Red clip Flame Orange, 2006 Sky Blue.

2006-7 change to Chrome clips & matching nibs on all, Except 1984's Umbra which continues in textured with Black clip to this day.

2015 LE's began with textured series and Black clip in Brown (Line Bear)

2016 Dark Lilac

2017 Petrol

2018 Black

I have a yellow Safari with black clip, black nib (my first Safari), purchased around 1999 or so. The yellow Safari currently available is a different shade of yellow. The old Safari is "schoolbus yellow", while the current Safari is more ilke "banana yellow". I shot this pic at the Lamy store in San Francisco.

My partner has a red Safari, black clip from the same time as my yellow; the modern red Safari is also a different shade.

Might be a new color. But colors vary through the years also. Pantone, for example, gives out a new cataloque every year as the mixtures may vary and "wander off" in time. Printers who want to be sure have to buy a new Pantone scale every year.

The color comparison......

Disappointing. I thought Lamy knew better than to release a Safari that looked like the same color of a recent mode----

Oh, 2015.

Right.

If you check Lamy Japan Instagram account, you'll discover that in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, today has been released this safari model as a limited edition.

I don't know why Lamy hates so much its customers from the rest of the world.

if you like, I've launched a petition to ask lamy the release of this model worldwide. You can find it on my IG account @gazcom or searching #lamylisten.
I've made it for joke and it's not actually something I believe would ever be possible, but.... come on guys, this white with red clip is gorgeous.

They can have that one too.

Savvy move.

They are trying to find their niche in the Asian market, which is way, way way mucho megabigger than what Europe and the Americas.

After all, it would be quite short sighted to focus on continents where, according to latest news, younglings "struggle to hold a pencil due to too much informatisation"

Pink and black? Meh, I'll pass.

On the flip side; I should be able to treat myself to a TWSBI mini....Hey Lamy, how's that for an idea? Make some mini Safari Fountain Pens!

"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.
