Montblanc - The Beatles - What Do You Think?

The pen is welcomed to continue living on submerged oceanic voyages without visiting my collection.

 

While it was better in person, I don't like the hand feel and it too closely resembles a novelty pen for my tastes.

I just looked at the Mont Blanc website and I see two models. One is the rainbow color, aka "special edition" and the other is the 1969 "limited edition".

 

Is that standard for Mont Blanc to have two themed models concurrently?

 

For the record I think the rainbow version is so weird I kind of like it. Plus I think they don't have a lot of choice but to make it colorful --there's no way the Beatles would inspire a dreary or drab colored pen.

It is nowadays. This started a few years ago where writers editions got two models and has spread to other lines. A clever way to increase revenue.

I could never afford it, and since I very much dislike the Beatles I wouldn't want to, but that said, I think it is still the ugliest pen I've seen yet. It looks like a £5 kids pen from Tesco!

From how I understand the Beatles actually has 3. The special edition, limited 1969, and edition 88.

The latter are of very similar design, while the special is simple rainbow.

 

It has actually grown on me the more I see it. However, at this point it's way down the list on pens I want.

For some reason I keep thinking about an old John Lennon quote about the department store Marks and Spencers (but of course I can't find it... ). It ends with something like "now it's Marks and Spencers'".

I like the design a lot. The colored barrel provides a strong contrast with the gun metal grip section and piston knob, which is very eye catching. The overall shape of the pen is very nice, the transition from grip section to the barrel and to the piston knob is smooth and nice. I believe the pen is all metal, and has an incredible 83 gram weight. Also, the space gray metal section makes this pen very "modern". For this price, I think it's a good design.

The shape of the pen is fine, but I am having a hard time appreciating the striped color finish. If it was a funky single tone shade like purple, I could like it more. The 1969 Limited edition on the other hand I don't mind, and I think can easily grow on me, but not so sure about the striped one. Will see what I think when I see it in person at the boutique.

When I first saw the pen I had the same feeling as you did, I feels the stripes make the pen feels cheap and funny. After looking at it for couple times, I found I kind of understanding the design and the pen start to growing on me...And it is very rare for Montblanc to put so many colors on one pen, even for limited editions, which actually makes the pen more special...

The striped color finish grows on you. If you were to say spend 15-20 mins with it, it starts to appeal. It would make a great pen for school, a pool or a garden etc. particularly that it is priced to sell.
