Dip Pen Parts

Hello,

I am looking at getting a morrisset dip pen of the bay. I am curious are there any internals to it? I have seen one with a metal baffle with two little holes. The one I am looking at doesn't have one, is that going to be an issue?

Thanks,

Mike

The few dip pens I have been around, are a holder and a nib. Nibs, being steel (not stainless) are prone to wear and need to be replaced occasionally. The nice thing is they are only a couple of dollars each.

Morriset dip pens come with a handle and a nib unit. The replaceable nib unit screw into the handle and comprises the nib and a feed contained in a thread sleeve. That’s it. Some handles have a brass band and some do not. I’m not sure what you means by the metal baffle.

EBay sellers often list desk sets where the pen and base do not match. I've seen Morriset pens in Sengbusch bases, and other creative combinations. I have quite a few Morriset desk sets (for dip and fountain pens), but none of them has a metal baffle.

It is possible that the piece I am referring to is not part of the original set up. When I get it next week I will take a picture and post it. If the 'baffle' does not belong then can I use the bottle with out the stopper with holes? Or should I get a rubber stopper and cut/shave and drill holes?

Thanks,

Mike

I think we'll need to see what you receive, and then we can give you a better idea of how it works.

It finally arrived! Well, actually my new 'desk set' pieces. I got a 'new' blotter and Morriset Model B dip pen. And here is that little piece I could not identify. I think it is made of plastic and I am guessing it was once covered in rubber and is what is left of the stopper? If that is what it is can I still use it if I find some way to wedge it into the opening of the bottle? Can I use the pen without the stopper and just turn the bottle upside down in the well? Sorry if my terminology is off about the different parts. anything special I should know about this pen before I start using it?

Thank you,

Mike

That’s the supper for the bottle.

Sorry, but what is a supper?

You can still find whole sets fairly inexpensively. They come up on eBay regularly. I've got a few. Not all of them have the ink bottle and stopper. Make sure you find out if they do, and if the stopper is completely trashed.

For working ink wells like this, I actually prefer the Esterbrook 444. It's easy to restore, fairly inexpensive, plentiful, and most of the pens use the Esterbrook renew-point interchangeable nibs. (the early ones which don't are actually fairly hard to find)

I like the look of the Morriset ink wells, but their design is not as easy to make useful. I'm not sure how much I'd trust the original rubber stoppers. You may be able to make a new one, but the Esterbrooks are easier. Just my 2-cents worth.

Well I finally got the inkwell up and running! I managed to wrap a rubber band around what is left of the stopper, filled the bottle and put it in the well. I don't think it fills it up to its full height because it only fills the pen about a 1/4 of the way up the feed. But it works like a dream using a fast drying ink from 'private reserve-fast drying black'. Thank you all for your replies.
