Hi, Folks!

This is a Sheaffer Snorkel Sovereign in Pastel Blue or Aqua c. 1952-1959. Pastel Blue / Aqua was one of the original Snorkel colors introduced in 1952. The Sovereign has an open 14 karat gold nib with two-tone mask, possibly palladium (similar to earlier Feathertouch nibs), polished stainless steel cap with five engraved panels and plastic barrel and gold-filled clip stamped "SHEAFFER'S." The cap panels are a set of two straight lines with a dashed and diamond line between. Colors produced were black, burgundy, pastel gray, pastel blue (or aqua), pastel green, buckskin tan, vermilion, and sage green. In 1955, the Snorkel Sovereign sold for $12.50 and the matching pencil was $5.25.

First year Snorkel Demonstrator, as shown by the gold coloured Snorkel. Though the cap has corrosion inside, presumably from the (brass?) cap insert, it doesn't *appear* to have been painted black inside at one time - all other Snorkel demos I have seen online so far have at least residual evidence of black paint inside the cap. This is my pen, recently acquired.

I would welcome discussion re: the cap paint or lack thereof.

Gosh, keto - what a set! Congratulations.

And that demonstrator is just fantastic. I think the snorkel is a good candidate for a demo pen, having such a complex interior mechanism, plenty to see. I've no idea about the cap, but the corrosion patina is very attractive, imho.

Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pen, Jim. I have only one Valiant in burgundy color with matching color section.

The two tone nib on mine is upturned and soft and marked 'SHEAFFER'S AUSTRALIA 14k.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a collection shot from last night. Most of these belong to sets. I started collecting with the turn of the calendar this year. More are on the way, I have a buckskin tan set coming. I didn't realize I had somehow missed picking up pastel green. As to the other colors, feel free to contact me if you have something I am missing that you'd sell :)

Is it well known that grey has shade variations? Also, I believe my 2 blues are both pastel, but as I hope you can see there is some variance there as well. The blue section blue is Canadian manufacture.

Hi, Folks!

This is a Sheaffer Snorkel Special in Black c. 1956-1959. The Special was a new entry-level model below the Admiral. It featured an open palladium silver nib, plastic cap and barrel, gold-filled clip stamped "SHEAFFER'S", and 1/4" wide gold-filled cap band. It was introduced prior to the new colors launched in 1957 as confirmed colors were black, burgundy, pastel gray, pastel blue (or aqua), and pastel green. Some secondary sources list buckskin tan, vermilion (a tangerine), and sage green, but these are not verified by primary sources. The Snorkel Special pen sold for $7.95 in 1956 and the pen and pencil set sold for $13.95.
