Sheaffer Snorkel Photo Thread 1952-1959

I think the earlier model Snorkels had gold breather tubes, but don't quote me on that.

Looks like your pen is a Valiant (white dot, plastic cap, wide cap band, two color Triumph nib). There's a good table of the various Snorkel models here: http://(bleep).com/website/sheaffersnorkelguide.htm

One of mine had a gold breather tube originally; but a guy said "Oh, I can show you how to repair it..." and his method was to (a) do the work himself instead of telling me how; and ( B) replacing the tube and sac with one he had, so HE ended up with the gold tube. So the tube in the pen now is not original OR (possibly) correct....

Thanks Ruth. I think the model is a Signature pen (described in the link you sent me) , because the cap band is hallmarked 14K which means it would be solid gold. I think the gold tube is rare and I haven't seen reference to it anywhere other than your confirmation.

Greetings,

Victor.

The gold snorkel, also 14k, was the first year production only: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/79477-golden-snorkel-tube/?p=771311

Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

Ah. I missed the part about the Signature not necessarily having a metal cap. Thanks for spotting that. I have a couple of Valiants, a Cadet, a couple of Admirals, a couple of Statesmans and a Sovereign, but not a Signature -- and every time I get a Snorkel, I have to look up to see what it is I've got because they've all been found in the wild (mostly at antique stores, but one -- the Burgundy Statesman, IIRC -- at an estate sale); the star of the stash is a black Statesman with a semi-flex factory stub Palladium Silver Triumph nib (and I almost didn't look at it because I already had a black Snorkel -- but when I did pull the cap, mostly because it was less expensive than a green Snorkel with a boring F nib and saw that stub I knew I'd gotten a real find... just not how MUCH of one it was). That pen gets treated to vintage Skrip Peacock, just because that ink looks SOOOO good coming out of that nib....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

post-126566-0-75917400-1569739722_thumb.jpgAn Assembly of Aussies.

An example of each of the Snorkel models that were Made in Australia: Admiral, Saratoga, Statesman, Clipper, 121SKD, Valiant, Sentinel, Crest, Autograph and Triumph. (So far, I have not found any evidence of Special, Sovereign, 5SKD, Signature or Masterpiece models with Australian markings.) Aussie Snorkels only came in the standard colours: black, burgundy, pastel green, aqua and pastel grey and were produced by the Sheaffer factory at Heidelberg, Melbourne from c1953 to c1960.

Wow Thanks Guys

Recently, Recently I re-discovered my Snorkels

I appear to be missing Vermilion and Masterpiece.

Last week I found in the Wild the Periwinkle

I then shifted some of the 14 k filler tubes to a couple special writers ... For some reason writing with a pen having that filler tube adds to the overal writing feeling. Pretty silly I guess

Picked up a mint Clipper set in Fiesta Red in original box with stickers at the Dallas Pen Show. Wish it were a Sentinel, like my Periwinkle and Mandarin, but it's beautiful nonetheless.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Hi, Folks!

UPDATE: I compared the pen in this photo with a Vermillion Cadet and another Fiesta Red Sentinel. The pen in the photo below is Vermillion. Thanks!

This is a Sheaffer Snorkel Sentinel Vermillion fountain pen c. 1956-1959. The fountain pen has a two-tone plated 14 karat gold Triumph nib, polished stainless steel cap with a repeating pattern of four straight longitudinal engraved lines in a stepped grouping, gold-filled cap band, gold-filled clip, and plastic barrel. Barrel colors produced from 1952 to 1955 were black, burgundy, pastel gray, pastel blue (or aqua), and pastel green. Peacock blue, buckskin tan, mandarin orange, fiesta red, fern green, and periwinkle blue were added later. The Sentinel fountain pen is 5 ½ inches long and sold for $20.00 in 1954 and $22.50 by 1955. The matching pencil sold for $7.50.

Thanks!

I have the same pen (Vermillion - Sentinel) with chalk marks. I thought this color/model combination was uncatalogued.fpn_1571900599__dsc05957.jpg

Hi Ricardo, are you certain that it is Vermilion all the way around?

Vermillion is in the Sheaffer repair manual. As I understand it, only Vermillion Sentinels have color match sections. Fiesta Red pens have black sections.

Yes I believe I was the one who brought that to your attention on a Facebook thread. I just wanted to make sure his pen was both a Vermilion section and barrel, and not a mismatch of a Fiesta barrel with Vermilion section.

Hi Brian, yes, it is full vermillion. The grip and the barrel have the identical color. I'm very surprised.

I got this pen in 2011, Humberto Sanches from Star Fountain Pen gave me the complete barrel without the nib. This is a very special pen for me.

When I puchased a "real fiesta red" pencil and other fiesta red fountain pen I saw the color difference.

Best regards

Great collection Brian.

Perhaps also missing the hard-to-find 74SKD Desk Pen?
