I tried a good few and ended up with Diamine Syrah with J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune as reserve champion. So not surprised to find then featuring strongly here. Diamine Merlot I found too brown.

My favorites are Diamine Merlot, Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses, and Noodler's Nightshade. But then again they all lean towards brown 😅

But in the right pen, you can see purple in Noodler's Nightshade which is really nice 😊 It also pairs really well with my Bordeaux Kaweco Sport.

I don't see the leaning brown in Merlot myself. In Levenger Pomegranate (which is no longer available) I do. Merlot seems to lean more purple side of the red spectrum to me.

In the scan I posted on page 1 Merlot looks more purple than brown. I just looked at the original and it confirmed this but I also looked at a draft scratch sheet on another paper and Merlot looked like a shade of brown -- not even a brownish shade of burgundy! Then I moved to another part of the room lit by a different lamp and then both papers looked purple. So, life is strange (if you use fountain pens) !-)

I was given a boxed 149 with a bottle of MB Burgundy in 2007, I already have a good 149 so I never got around to using the pen - or the ink. Having seen this thread I did a swab test and the ink isnt the colour I was expecting, I thought it would deep and dark - a deep maroon perhaps. The reality is a lighter shade, more like a glass of burgundy on a sunny day!

The Montblanc Burgundy Red is a reddish burgundy for sure. Some people expecting a darker burgundy may be disappointed.

I like the reddish burgundy shade in it's own right. It's like a red wine color. It will vary depending on how wet and saturated your nib is. Looks best in a wet juicy nib.

Burgundy is not among the Six Essential Inks. And yet I have Noodler's Red-Black (a PIF). At first, it was rather a very dark, reddish brown, but smudgy. I diluted it to remedy the smudging, and now it is a burgundy. It is a very well-behaved ink. I should use it more often.

Well, nursing school starts next year; I can readily use it for that.

Here is a scan of the inks I have on hand that might qualify. Note that some of these are very old inks. The samples were all written on the same day, though. The Mont Blanc looks too yellow in the scan but it is rather pale. I also see I got the name wrong. It is "Mont Blank Bordeaux".

I must admit I've never heard of Diamine Vampire Red, although I have heard of Private Reserve Vampire Red.

I like Diamine Red Dragon although I don't think that's really a burgundy. So one more vote for Diamine Syrah. :) Or Louis Vuitton Rouge Libertin?
