~ The South China Morning Post in Hong Kong published the above article this evening about the Montblanc Heritage Spider Metamorphosis.

It follows earlier articles in other publications with photographs of the diamond spider very limited edition.

The article draws a connection between authors mentioning spiders in their works to Montblanc's new pens with associated jewelry.

Be more fun if the bug replaced the clip and more contrasting stones or much less. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

How about that cuckoo-crazy Montblanc star on the cap?

Ai-yi-yi! That's not something one sees every day.

A touch of subtlety never hurts. The ‘Less is More’ credo has its value.

When the South China Morning Post article was published this evening, it struck me that this model is a fascinating display of the jeweler's art.

What's less clear is how much it reflects a variation in the pensmith's art.

In any case, I'm glad that Montblanc continues to innovate.

I’m partial to star sapphires myself, but in settings that enhance the stone, not conflict.

The new spider skeleton still falls short o the Magical Balck Widow pen in my eyes.

Why does the star sapphire shown above have an odd similarity to an eye?

Being under the gaze of a pen cap might be a fairly unsettling experience.

It needs a diamond-studded, platinum eyelid.

After reading your comment above I asked friends overseas to send me screen shots of the 2004 Limited Edition Magical Black Widow.

Not having seen such a pen, I was interested to see how it might compare to the Heritage Spider Metamorphosis.

They're quite different in nearly all aspects, no? Not only that, they're unlike the 1993 PoA Octavian.

The engraving around the cap rim on the Magical Black Widow is striking. It reminded me of 1930s architecture.

The nib engraving is really something...the web of webs.

The newly released pen with detachable jewelry is altogether different.

Hmm...

Why are arachno-pens popular but no butterfly pens have been released yet?

Bite your diamond-studded tongue!

I don’t mind being stared at by a beautiful pen. Fair is fair. I’m certainly staring at the pen if it has a luscious sapphire for one end.

Better to be stared at by a luscious sapphire than by an eight-eyed diamond spider.

While not strictly a butterfly, the Carnegie patron pen features a femal shaped clip and the cap overlay behind the clip forms butterfly-like wings for the frmal figure. Perhaps more of a fairy, but similar.

Picture swiped fromteh web and taken by Bryant Greer for his firm. Ghost Plane has a lovely pen and can likely take a more relevant photo.

One more maybe butterfly...

From the 2008 Annual Edition Mythical Creatures I see the Cerberus has some little winged creatures around it. Maybe butterflies?

Oh my goodness!

The sprite-like female figure does have butterfly wings.

Thank you for pointing that out. Impressive.

That evens it up a bit, with all of the arachno-pens out there, not to mention the Kafka's cockroach.

The Beatles pen doesn't count, does it, despite the name?

*****************************************************

Time to tell a true story.

I was in the 5th grade in Medina Elementary School in Medina, Washington, in the Autumn of 1963.

Girls in the class, especially Mary Kay P., Karen C. and Kim P., carried folders called PeeChees.

Stickers appeared on their PeeChees with what I took to be four beetles with the words: “The Beatles Are Coming”.

I wondered what that was about and the odd spelling.

It took several months before I caught on that the four “beetles” were silhouettes of the Beatles’ haircuts, a U.K. singing group.

A long time ago, but I smile to remember it.

Gotta love the internet...

You want a sparkley butterfly MB pen? Well here you go and it is 10 years in existence to boot.

~ zaddick:

I'd love to have access to such a productive Internet.

Where I work and live, the Internet has been “sanitized for your protection”, hence not often effective for “foreign” Web sites.

Both of the pens you've shown are really striking.

The sparkly butterfly mentioned above is a fitting companion piece for the Heritage Spider Metamorphosis.

There's a similar design philosophy hidden there — something along the lines of “More is more”.

Those Cerberan winged buddies look like butterflies to me. I've never seen any mosquitoes which looked so charming.

I'm happy to stand corrected. It looks as if Lepidoptera isn't so far behind the Arachnids, after all.

Thank you for posting those.

Here ya go. I think of it more as an angel pen. (Or girlpower)

~ Ghost Plane:

That's quite a fountain pen!

If it's an angel, her wings are more like a butterfly than a bird.

Thank you for posting those images.

What a remarkable design to commemorate canny and generous old Mr. Carnegie.

I'm waiting for the glow-in-the-dark Great Characters Montblanc honoring Madame Curie, with fireflies on the barrel which light up after dark.

Fireflies?

I would be willing to accept that guess too. Butterflies would not have as large a body, but since these are Mythical Creatures, why not a chubby butterfly?

That would be a case where it wasn't the nib which was a triple broad, but the barrel a triple broad 149+++.

I still want the Great Characters Madame Curie pen.

It might be the ideal bedside pen for jotting down dreams on dark nights of the soul.
