I don't know if this is the right thread for this question so if it isn't I apologize in advance and please let me know so I know where to go in the future. It has to do with nibs so i figure I'd give it a try.

I just submitted 2 pens to the Montblanc boutique today for nib exchanges and the rep said that the waiting time was quite long. When I asked him for specifics he said that he couldn't tell me. I heard that 2 months was the normal. Can others on here chime in on this.

Mine too has been gone for over a month now. The estimated time given to me too was about two months.

I believe it depends on the pen. As an example, I had my M nib Blue Hour LeGrand sent out for a nib exchange to a BB. As it is a more common pen these days, I got it back in 4 weeks with the new nib. On the opposite end, I purchased the newer Burgundy JFK in May when it was first put on display at my MB boutique. They said since it has the champagne color nib and it is new, I wouldn't get the pen back with an OBB nib until November. That's half a year. So I think it depends on the pen model and how new the design is. But I'm no expert. Others on here know much more than I do.

I let to change the nib F to EF on new 149 in 2005. I submitted the pen (according to my logbook :-)) on Jan 19 and got it back on Apr 29.

It is much better to order pen with the chosen nib. It is faster than to wait for the nib exchange. You’ll wait two or three weeks. Montblanc needs to sold new pens, not to change the nibs subsequently. :-)

I was informed that the current wait time is a minimum of six weeks due to unusually high demand for nib exchanges. I blame this thread. :)

I just sent a couple in. One came back in a month and the other in 6 weeks.

Yes, this thread is it

Last year, about this time, it took from mid-July to early September to receive a Rose Gold 149 with an O3B. This year I already have 6 weeks invested in the wait for a Martele with an OB, and one month waiting for a Homer with an OM...

Worth it though. Exquisite nibs :P

I have a Homer and have been really contemplating on a nib exchange. In your comment above, do you mean it only took 4 weeks for your Homer nib exchange, or that you have been waiting 4 weeks thus far and continue to wait for the OM nib? If it is only a one month wait time and they have Homer nibs ... I may bite the bullet and just send mine in to try for an OBB or BB

Thank you everybody for your replies. i didn't realize so many are using the exchange program. I can only assume that this is due to either wanting to try out the stock nib and then not liking it and choosing a new one, like in my case, or wanting to purchase the pen even without your desired nib because of limited inventory.

Here is another question about the various nibs. Does the same grind differ in writing experience if it is on a different model? For example, does a OBB write the same on all 146 based WEs, or is there a slight difference. If there is a slight difference, when did Montblanc start to change their nibs.

The reason I ask is because I have a Dumas, Christie and Mark Twain, all in medium. The Dumas puts down a slightly wider line, and I assume that this is because it is the 149-sized nib, then the Christie. And the Twain writes a little smoother than the Christie. Another reason for the question is the demo pens that are used at the boutiques, at least in the one I went to, are all 146s.

Last question, is the OBBB a special order because I didn't see that represented on the demo pens.

OBBB isn’t a standard option for 146-sized nibs. The OBB is as large as you can go.

You’ll find the nibs are all slightly different since they’re handmade. Some are a little wider or narrower, some are crisper edged...it’s all part of the adventure.

Alas, I am still waiting on both. The pens were ordered from different vendors, both of whom are handling the nib exchange.

In my case, I have plenty of F and M nibs and now want "more interesting" nibs. It made more sense to me to just order the special nib right from the start, rather than buy the F or M and then turn it around and send it back in.

If I remember correctly, the O3B is only a special order on the 149 size nibs. Someone will correct this if I'm wrong.

Yes O3B is only available for #9 nib. Relating your remark why people are buying a pen and asking nib exchange after I think the reason is simple. In shop (MB or authorized reseller) the pens are only available in M and sometime F nibs, the others are not proposed. So you don't have the choice to buy the pen and asking after the exchange. If you buy online you can ask the nib you want most of the time but I suppose the online reseller sends the pen to MB requesting the exchange for you and ship it to you when he received it from MB so there is always a nib exchange. This is what I think but I could be wrong.

I know it isn't Fall yet, which is the perfect time to start restore projects, but this weekend I pulled this unloved Montblanc No. 14 with a B nib out of my project box to see if I could make it live again. Hours of soaking, total teardown, free up the piston and apply a little silicone, then all back together again. Fingers crossed. Left it filled over a couple nights to make sure it was not going to leak. And viola! Now I need to spend some time on that cute little B nib :P

To me the 14/74/84/94 is an underrated series of pens. Great work in bringing one back to life.
