Lol. That's what makes it worth doing!

EDit to add: Your Japan/Daiso haul was quite something. And I think the mod missed the point...

Will work for pens...

Noice!

Still haven't touched my Daiso haul from our Osaka and Kyoto trip earlier this year myself. I think I need to start drawing again. Got an idea in mind for a “stickman” cartoon, but alas I'm sure it's going to offend some folk (less so here than on Reddit).

I know you’ve posted about Reddit. I think I got a comment that you have referred to. Here is what someone asked me to do with a Levenger True Writer pen.

from Reddit:

Could you measure the pen, closed, open (from the start of the nib to the end of the barrel), and posted, along with the barrel diameter, and the Section diameter at 37mm from the start of the nib? If so, thank you, it's much appreciated. Also, when posted where does the Cap opening fall relative to the web of the hand, and if it falls above, does the cap opening feel sharp, or can be felt at all? 🔚

it was from a user named kiiroaka. I was too nice, and measured some as asked, got some information from Levenger’s website. But that is a lot to ask.

I came across a seemingly new stockist in NSW of Iroful, Wearingeul, FWP, etc. this morning, so I decided to give them a go. The free domestic shipping eligibility threshold is (AUD) $85, and I was only going to give them as close to that amount as possible… but ended up spending nearly $150!

Instead of buying just one pack, I ended up cleaning out their stock of (one of) the cheapest retail product of Iroful loose sheets they stock. (Packs of the same type of paper, same page size, and same sheet count are priced differently for different preprinted guide marks or lack thereof.) Also bought a whole lot of Wearingeul Reservoir 140gsm and Impressions 200gsm paper to try out; the Impressions paper is what is used for all those Wearingeul swatch cards you have seen on Reddit and Instagram, with the Cheshire Cat grin, bunny face, etc. in ink resist, or with preprinted outlines of a bottle with a square footprint.

I might end up making some more of those paper sampling flip pads like the ones I gave away at the local Pelikan Hubs 2023, with A7-sized sheets that are enough to show the differences between various types of paper for writing with or swatching one or two inks, but more of a ‘tease’ than anything useful for information content either at the event or afterwards.

Thanks for this nugget of information, I was looking for alternatives earlier this year when all my usual shops were sold out of cards. That sounds like a good store for Aussie stationery lovers!

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Sailor 🐧 Mini Pro Gear Slim M, Van Dieman’s Neptune’s Necklace

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Pelikan M605 F, Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

I haven't got a good gauge on their pricing yet, because frankly I wasn't that interested in getting (more) Iroful paper than I already had, so I haven't been tracking Amazon's prices that closely as well as looking at other local stockists (whether they're selling “grey market” imports or not, when I'm not even sure Sakae Technical Paper has an official distribution channel/agent in Australia). My impression is that Soe & Soe's “markup” on the Iroful products are in the 70% to 75% region, when compared to the retail prices in the Japanese domestic market (inclusive of 10% consumption tax there, which mirrors the Australian GST rate). Now that I know more intimately how much it costs businesses to send something by way of Australia Post's services, given the reasonable free shipping threshold Soe & Soe has set, I think it's quite decent; and they are price-competitive with Amazon.com.au for Iroful products sold and shipped by Amazon Japan, from the few snapshots I remember.

Markup on Midori products is higher.

I have no idea about the markup on Wearingeul; and until this morning I didn't even know Wearingeul did a range of paper products outside of swatch cards. Soe & Soe's pricing of the Reservoir 140gsm paper is comparable to Iroful paper on a per sheet basis, so I thought I'd give that a go.

Thankyou for that. They do have some cute stuff. The walnut watercolour palettes - oh my - all sold out isn't surprising.

Wow, notwithstanding this is Christmas Eve, the order I placed with Soe & Soe this morning has already been lodged with the post office! Soe fficient! 👍

I wrote an email to them just now, to let them know how damn impressed I am.

I got five inserts today for my passport size Travelers Notebook. Three are the Road Trip featuring a Volkswagen van. The other two are the Kraft paper, and sticker release paper.

Also, two charms arrived that can go on other Travelers Notebooks.

Does anyone use Postalco snap pads to hold paper?  I love mine.

@Doug C how do these work?  Does it hold the paper firmly in place?

Currently most used pen: Parker 51 <F> -- filled with Pilot Blue Black ink

Never seen this either - some nice stuff on their website, but I agree, the prices sting.

I stopped buying anything from Levenger for the same reason.  Ridiculous shipping prices  to Australia (and some poor service).
