Hi, Folks!

This is a Wahl Ribbon Design gold filled medium clip fountain pen c. 1929. This 4 7/8 inch long pen has the engine turned Ribbon Design, a repeating pattern of four straight lines and a space around the cap and barrel. This example has five per panel. Though the pattern only shows in the 1921 catalog, this example dates c. 1929 due to the WAHL-EVERSHARP MADE IN CHICAGO cap top stamping. It comes with an earlier Number 2 14 karat gold nib stamped WAHL 2 14K.

Offered on pens from 1925 to 1926. This 4 7/8 inch long pen may be an early version as the WAHL name is stamped on the arch of the clip, as seen on pens in the 1924 catalog, where pens in the 1925 catalog show the WAHL name stamped on the top tab of the clip. It's probably a model 645D, though slightly shorter and comes with a correct 14 karat gold Number 4 size nib stamped WAHL 4 14 K. The barrel has a rectangular blank for engraving, opposite the lever. The pen sold for $5.00 and the matching model 35 Eversharp pencil sold for $2.00.

As with many of your posts, Jim, a great resource.

I have a 4 3/8 433A Colonial, but without the Tempoint nib label and with a metal section. Does that indicate later production?

Love this info, thanks. Helped me pin down the dates of my O model. When I first saw it, it reminded me of 2 penny nails.Although you can't see that detail in this pic. Again great info.

Thanks for starting and contributing the data and images to the forum. I will add a few more pattern soon and a few company name changes for some pattern too eg Unique and Check. David Nishimuras Vintage Pen site has a section devoted to WAHL metal pen patterns.

Hi, Folks!

This is another view of this fabulous pen.

This is a Wahl Niagara 12 karat yellow gold filled over silver medium size fountain pen c. 1927. The Niagara Design is a gold-on-silver design where part of the gold fill is cut away and the "coral" shapes pattern is cut into the silver base metal. This 4 15/16 inch long pen is the medium size slender model 4214P with a 14 karat gold Number 2 size nib. This nib is stamped WAHL 2 14K. Introduced and probably only produced in 1927. There are three pens with the Niagara Design in the 1927 catalog, the Number 2 nib 3214P ringtop, this pen, and the large size Number 4 nib 6214P.

Thank you, Jim, for this fantastic reference.

I recently acquired the X7164 in great cosmetic condition, being aware that the filling mechanism was out of order.

I carefully opened the pen to find, as expected, that the sac had completely disintegrated.

However, the filling mechanism was missing too.

Do you know what kind of mechanism these pens used?

Was it a pressure bar + anchor, or a J-bar setup?

Hi, Folks!

This is a Wahl Ring Colonial Design 12 karat yellow gold filled fountain pen c. 1929. The Ring Colonial Design is a modification of the Colonial design with a pair of black enameled wide rings cut in repeating up the cap and barrel with the three cuts between filled with black enamel. This 4 15/16 inch long pen is the medium size model with a 14 karat gold Number 4 size nib. This nib is stamped WAHL EVERSHARP 14K GOLD SEAL FLEXIBLE. Larger size pens are known but rare. Introduced and probably only produced in 1928 and 1929. Earlier, 1928 pens would have the top cap band engraved WAHL PEN, as shown in the 1928 catalog. This pen is engraved WAHL - EVERSHARP over GOLD FILLED MADE IN CHICAGO, U.S.A., indicating a later pen, likely 1929. The barrel has a small rectangular blank for engraving between the second from the bottom sets of rings. The medium size pen was model X7164 and sold for $8.00 in 1928 and the matching Eversharp pencil was $5.00. Ringtop pens and pencils were also made.

I don't repair them. I would ask Ron Zorn.

There is a bar that slides on to tabs on the inner part of the lever. It is easy to replace once you source the part. Just look for a trashed Wahl metal pen in a similar length to harvest the part.
