Out Comes The Orange Ink...

So it's that time of year again. Out comes the orange ink. Who needs pumpkin spice flavoring (What about the cloves? There are no cloves!) when you can leave a permanent reminder to your welcoming of the fall. Since it has finally cooled here in my part of Southern California (highs in the low 80s) I'm in. Leaves are gonna change aannny month now.

I actually pulled my Captain's Commission broad italic back into rotation a couple of days ago with some Apache Sunset.

I'll take pumpkin spice while I can get it. The spice must flow!

We had a foot of snow on Monday, so "fall" is here.

I always like seasonal colors, but don't consciously ink up an array of pens for that purpose. This season, though, it is working out well.

My two oranges:

Diamine Pumpkin (of course)

Noodler's Golden Aspen

Also in rotation for the season:

Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Guri (dark brown)

Diamine Cocoa Shimmer (slightly reddish dark brown with shimmer)

Diamine Crimson

Private Reserve Avacado (matches the pine trees)

Sailor Shigure (purple black)

Sailor Souten (sky blue)

Predicted to be a high of 91 here on Monday.

KWZ Honey has been inked up for me this week. The golden color reminds me of the golden yellow tree leaves we get a lot of here in Chicago.

Same here. A few pens inked with KWZ Honey, Diamine Autumn Oak, Montblanc Lucky Orange, Ancient Copper, and Apache sunset. One pen with Lamy Petrol and a stub nib for work correspondence. Probably going to take until 2018 to use them all up.

GORGEOUS still life! I am a BIG fan of Orange Indien, too.

For years, I was not a great admirer of orange inks, but something changed, and now they are among my all-time favorites. Currently loaded for the autumn season (—and it's dark, rainy day here in Indianapolis, with temperatures dipping down into the 50s this afternoon—) going from bright to dark:

1. Sailor Hachimitsu (Honey)

2. Sailor Apricot

3. J. Herbin Orange Indien

4. Monteverde Fire Opal

5. Krishna The Earth

6. KWZ Monarch

7. Blackstone (scented) Wild Orange

8. Diamine Ancient Copper

Orange is my happy color whatever the season. High today is expected to be 96 degrees, so color is my connection to autumn. The weather certainly isn't!

I've disliked almost every orange that I've tried except Lamy Orange.

Oh, yes! It's one of my top favorites. I have it in a Pelikan M800 Grand Place with STUB nib. Wonderful.

I think much the same of brown inks.

Brown is so wildly varied, that you may, one day, find the perfect shade that appeals to you. I've always loved red-browns (de Atramentis Cola, for example), and now I love the orange-browns (KWZ Monarch), gold-browns (Califolio Inti), and even pink-browns (Califolio Aurora). But I know that I'm not so keen on the green-browns. If you want to explore a bit, you might try sample sizes of the L'Artisan Pastellier (Califolio) inks —their browns are really lovely.

Montblanc Lucky Orange is a rather plain orange, but very well-behaved--no nib crud.

Robert Oster Ng Special '16 is a little darker and more subtle, with tremendous shading. I like it quite a bit for fall. On the opposite, eye-searing end of the spectrum, try Robert Oster Orange Zest.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Don't forget the Orange thread *see the link my signature.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
