New M805 Blue Stripe

Yesterday I got my new Pelikan M805 with M nib from Missing-pens.de it took one week to make it from Germany to Washington State. That actually was not too bad! I went with a M nib because I was reading here that M800 nibs tended to be marked one grade finer then they wrote compared to other Western nibs. In my case that is WRONG. The M nib puts down a 0.6mm line on Rhoda paper with kon-peki ink. That is the very same width as my Montblanc 146 M and my Pelikan m215 M. I guess I should have gone with the B. I do like the nib and plan on keeping it but I am getting into broader nibs and M is my new F. Maybe at some point I will have it reground to a M CI. The nib is also not as wet as I expected, but sometimes it takes a page or so of writing before a nib really decides to flow its best. Its smooth but does not skate on Rhodia paper which is just right for me.

 

I really like the feel of the M805 in hand. It has a nice solid feel that I enjoy. I like the feel of the section even though it is short. It has a nice curve to it and its right where I would hold the pen. The color is darker then many pictures I have seen of the pen and a little purple in the blue. In any case my favorite color is blue so I like it. The blue stripes don't make the best ink window but not much worse then the dark window on my M215 rings model.

The tree frog is something I put out on my 3D printer. I did not create the model, its something I got off the internet. I use the frog to help test the balance point on my pens when I take pictures of them.

Sorry to hear that you’re not happy with the medium nib that came with your pen. I’ve always bought Fine nibs on my M-800’s. The medium’s that i’ve had are just too wet and broad for me to use in journaling. But, i love the way the pen fits in my hand.

Recently i’ve Noticed that the Pelikan nibs do not put down a consistant line width from nib to nib. You may have just got a medium that has a thinner ink line...*shruggs*...It happens, there seems to be no rhyme or reason. It’s frustrating.

I do know that they open up a bit over time as you use them. Like an old pair of slippers. After a time they just fit like that were made for you.

I do like medium nibs and think they are a good general use size for me. I am in no rush to change it. For many years fine was my thing, but after getting used to medium stubs and cursive italic nibs medium is my new standard and the fine nibs go unused. Next time I will get a B. Who knows maybe B would have been wide from Pelikan and it was better the M was a M....

Yep.... I have owned a Pelikan M200 demonstrator since 2008. Being able to unscrew the nib so easy is great for cleaning or swapping. Pelikan really did that right! It seems to work much better then nib units from other companies.

 

The price of gold nibs is not cheep. Getting them from a US dealer costs almost as much as I spent on the pen. But buying from Germany I am looking at $200-$220 for an M80x nib so its about $180 less then a second pen.

Okay, thanks for the update on the reality of buying nibs. I haven't purchased for at least 15 years now.

Congrats on the M805. That's a great pen. I love the blue barrel with the palladium plated trim. I think that it makes for an excellent combination.
