Noodlers Boston Safety Pen

I just had a look at some product sites. It says the nib is a #2. So I would assume you could get a standard JoWo #2 generic nib. Although I am not sure where. I see generic 5 or 6 ones all the time, but I don’t come across #2 all that much.

 

That being said, I agree with that sentiment when I need a daily pen. Don't get me wrong, I love the way a Noodlers pen flexes, but I don’t really want flex when I work.

If you're pressing hard enough to flex, a fountain pen may not be ideal for your work.

Any old #5 should fit. get a JoWo or Bock #5 and you'd be done.

Well, I did my first experiment. I swapped the nibs between my Muji pen and the Boston Safety Pen. I'm going to call it a success. My Boston Safety Pen now has a nice, hard nib which is relatively smooth. I really enjoy writing with it in a way that I was just ho-hum about before. The strange thing is, I actually like the Noodler's "flex" nib in the Muji pen better. It's less scratchy than when it was in the Boston Safety, and I can still get some line variation. However, it railroads almost immediately if I try any amount of flexing--unless I go REALLY slowly.

 

(FYI, I tried a Charlie nib in the Muji pen, but the angle was wrong and the ink didn't flow so well.)

 

So I guess that means the Schmidt "F" nib in the Muji pen is a #5. I really had no way of knowing without trying.

Now that I have switched out the nib to the Schmidt "F" from the Muji pen, I think this makes a pretty good knock-around pen to carry in a bag--provided you don't need it for jotting things down quickly. It should also make for the ultimate airplane pen.
