Removing Mb Nib Units

It appears MB nib units can be screwed out like Pelikan, but will void the warranty.

I haven't tried this on my pens, but sounds like it might be useful to do if you don't have a warranty to worry about to maintain the pen, ie cleaning the ink chamber and applying some silicone grease with a q tip to the chamber walls to lubricate those pistons.

Have others here tried removing their nib units on their MBs? Any issues encountered? When did MB allow the nib units to be screwed out? Always thought a special tool was needed to remove the nib which MB does not sell to the public.

I didn't realize there was another thread started on the exact same question. What a coincidence.

My question is inspired by this video I came across where the reviewer is able to easily unscrew 3 nib units on his 3 modern 149s.

See 2.45 mins and 5:40 mins into the video.

You will need a Nib Removal Tool or make your own.

I think if what you really want is to clean and lube the piston it would be easier and less chance of leaks to pull the piston. Still takes a special tool but does not require the sealant the older nib units do. It would also be better to lube the piston its self then the walls of the ink chamber.

Am I right to think modern nib units don't use any sealant? If so, when did this change occur? My Voltaire arrived with the nib unit unscrewable by finger and thumb, it hasn't leaked in use either.

I am not sure what year the change to fine threads happened or even if it was the same year on all models. From looking at the chart on changes it might have been around 2014 for 149's. In general new 146/149's need still need a tool for the nib, they just have fine threads that don't need the pink sealant.

Everytime i get a new pen the nib unit is SUPER hard. Montblanc seals them with something prior to shipment.

I WOULD NOT recommend anyone to attempt to screw it out without the tools... They can be acquired on Ebay for $30 or less.

Once you have the tool, its super easy to play with the pen.
