Sheaffer Snorkel Triple Sets

G'day OMASsimo

There isn't a lot of first-hand information on the Australian Sheaffers. Snorkel production probably started in c1954 and went through until c1961. It looks like they were only produced in the 'old' colors: black, grey, aqua, burgundy and pastel green.

If the pen has an Australian 3-line barrel Inscription, it indicates that it was made in the earlier part of this production period. If it has two lines, then it is later. We don't know when the inscription changed, so this is only a rough indication. There are also reports of Australian Snorkels in 'old' colors with matching section, which would mean that they were produced post-1956.

Enjoy your Aussie Snorkel.

Regards

Thanks a lot for this valuable information! I just checked and my Snorkel has the two line inscription but the black rippled section. So, if I understand you correctly, it's not an early production but maybe not a late one either? Not that it would matter, I'm just curious. It's a great pen regardless of it's precise age. I'm only sorry that it gets too little use because I simply have too many great vintage pens which all want to be in rotation...

I would love to see it.

Okay, but even I can't tell the difference between old and new burgundy in a photo--hard enough with the eye. Anyway. this is the best I could do--outdoors in the sun. Which one is darker? (I know but I don't see it in the photo.)

A year ago I posted the Snorkel triple sets I'd been fortunate enough to find, and now it's time to update the thread with more that have come my way in the last year.

Meanwhile a matter has arisen related to the production run of triples, and some expressed the belief that there probably were none made in the new colors. There's proof here that a set was made in Sage, and a while ago I posted a rather poor photo of a Clicker in new burgundy, a Clicker however that that doesn't click--the action is stuck in the open position. I won't post photos of that one until I have a complete triple in new burgundy that I can photograph next to a triple in old burgundy.

Here's the Sage triple:

An unrestored triple in black. The Clicker has a frozen clicker:
