Mb 149 - Send To Mb Or Nibmeister For Nib Tuning?

Greetings! I need some advice. I have an early 1990's MB 149 which needs nib work. I'm guessing it's baby's bottom but the tines also seem to be "wanky" and need adjusted at the bare minimum. I'm not comfortable working on a nib and I live in Germany.

 

I've read about MB's service and it seems that they are more apt to replace parts than fix them, and the cost to replace a nib is very expensive. Also, I bought this pen used (the body and cap are in perfect condition), but unsure if I will keep it as I've really fallen in love with some of my other pens.

 

I'd like to know if it's advisable to send the pen to MB for service or if it would potentially be better to send it to a nibmeister. If you are suggesting a nibmeister, do you know of a good one in Europe, preferably in Germany?

Hi Dave,

 

Sorry, I don't know of any nib technicians in your area - but, yes, this is definitely the way to go. Montblanc service is great for many things - but not nib-tuning on older pens. You are correct to say that they will probably replace, rather than adjust the nib.

 

Hopefully, some of our Eurpoean members will chime in soon with some recommendations.

I have the greatest regard for John Sorowka, an English nib expert, on here as Oxonian, He has done several MB nibs for me and all were exceptional.

I can vouch for John Sorowka, he has worked on several of my Montblanc nibs and all have come back in perfect working order.

MB will want to swap the nib for like 300 euros. Tuning is the way to go. Besides John and Max already mentiomed, Francis (member fountainbel) in Belgium is good with MBs and nibs.

Thanks. Mike looks like a good person to employ. Sent him an email inquiry only because MB is not among the brands he lists on his home page. I suspect that's simply one he didn't bother to include but wanted to be sure. This is very strange for me. The 149 is mine if I want it but it's very different from the compact pens (TWSBI Mini for an example of size) I favor. Because it's so iconic I may just keep this 149-though, same as many of us, I already have too many multiples of small objects-pocket knives, pens and mechanical pencils-that I don't regularly use, so I'm not sure I want to add another!
