I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about those lovely Nakaya pens where people can post pictures of their own Nakaya pens and ask questions about them. What do you guys think?

I was looking on their website and noticed that the Cigar Aka Tamenuri is a different colour (almost black) to the Writer Aka Tamenuri (bright red). Is this the case?

Uh oh. If I post the first picture, will I have to register as a sex offender? And if I post the second, with Danitrios in a group pose with Nakayas, will I be considered a pervert?

These are not made in a factory or mass-produced. They are individually hand made and lacquered with biologic materials. Uniformity is not characteristic, nor is it desirable. The uniqueness of each pen is among its virtues.

For example, I have a Naka-ai in unpolished shu (see above). Unless you put it right next to my Piccolo, which is in shu, you wouldn't know it has a different color. I have seen other unpolished shu Nakayas that are very much darker - almost red-brown. Similarly, although you can't appreciate it in my photo, the Portable Writer in Kuro-tamenuri is reddish-black in bright sunlight. In the photo, it looks plain black. It is actually less black than most of the kuro-tame pens I have seen.

Bottom line: Pens with the same lacquer finish will differ in color. There is no predictable difference according to shape or whether the pen has a clip or not.

Hope that answers your question.

David

David, that does makes it clear for me, thank you. The reason why I was asking is because I intend to order a portable writer and customize it with writing and I dont want to choose black writing for a black or dark pen. It looks like the safe bet will be to choose gold colour writing.

Jar: are the three middle pens in the first picture portable writers?

Yes. And the next two images are Platinum Izumos.

I have never tried it, but I suppose you could request a particular shading of your chosen finish, especially if the pen is going to be a special order. If you try this, please let us know their response to your request.

Good luck!

Well, apparently the waiting times are 8-9 months or 1 month if you choose the metal thread. :yikes: :yikes:

Yes. The natural threading is a major time issue. First remember that the threads need to be cut with enough leeway to allow them to function after the are coated with urushi. That second part, the urushi coating and curing is done by different craftsmen at different locations.

might as well jump in too,,,, even though I only have one Nakaya... but it is the most amazing pen. I didn't think anything would beat my M800s until this showed up.
