What Will You Take To, Or Hope To Learn From The Pelikan Hub This Year?

I look forward to my first Hub this year. Not sure what I will take, or what I hope to learn. I'm sure I will take my 1933 100, my 400NN, and at least one of my Pendleton Brown italics, either an M600, or M800. About some suggestions?

I forgot: I'll take some empty pens to try new inks. I will also take my new MonteVerde Blue Horizon to share. I'm very pleased with it.

Well, I'll take all my Pelikan pens, of course. And probably all the Pelikan and Edelstein inks I have. And the two small pen stands (I have a gold colored one I picked up at DCSS a few years ago, and a white one that I got last winter at Fountain Pen Hospital in NYC. And I always bring some sort of little goofy doodad. The first year I got to the Pittsburgh Hub it was the gold stand, and then the second one it was that and a very silly little "Lucky Cat" (with a battery powered arm!) I picked up at a nearby Barnes and Noble killing time before I had to get to the Hub. So "Lucky" will of course tag along with the pen stands, and possibly also the 1960s Rat Fink I got myself for my birthday last year (blue with painted eyes).

Oh, and since this year the Hub is at a church (rather than a restaurant) I will likely make cookies or a pie or something. Hmmm. Wonder if I could find a nib-shaped cookie cutter.... B)

ETA: YIKES! That's like less than a month away now, isn't it? :yikes:

Has anybody who's signed up for the Detroit Hub heard any details yet? I haven't and I'm getting concerned.

The hub is a great experience. Just come with an open mind. You'll see great pens and have even better conversations. I find that the people, not the pens are what really makes the day enjoyable.

Definitely come with empty pens. Ink sampling looks to be back this year.

@MCN. Has your hub master reached out at all yet? I sent my group an intro email but have not provided final details yet as they are still in the works.

Three things, four really:

  • Pens. If you have an unusual Pelikan bring it, lots of people will be interest and you will find that you will be interested in looking at others' unusual Pelikans.
  • Paper. If you have a variety of different papers (don't we all?) cut a few sheets in half, label the sheets and bring it along so folks can see what writing on Tomoe River, or Verge de France, or Crown Mill pure cotton bond is like.
  • Ink. Or anything pen related that you want to get rid of. You can sell a bottle of ink you've decided you don't care much for, probably for not a lot of money but you can get it out of your box, thereby making room (and a mental justification) for buying MORE ink. If you do this, bring along some cotton swabs so people can get a sense for what that ink looks like on paper. You might also bring along some blotter paper or a roll of paper towels, better to be prepared for a mishap than to leave a purple ink stain on the churches' lunch room table.
  • Your best smile. As Joshua said, it's the people more than the 'things' and you will make some new friends, pen pals etc.

The Brisbane hub is apparently progressing fairly well, although as yet not everyone registered has pre-ordered their food to help out the venue kitchen; it's not compulsory, but it's a reasonable request.

At least the parcel of attendee gifts arrived safely today, well in advance... all 37 kg. of items to be sorted and then transported to the venue by the Hub Mistress... what a job!

My small collection of 17 FPs & 1 BP will easily fit in a pen case, so I'll take them all. Currently all are empty but I may partly fill one or two.

The Hub Mistress is bringing a few Pelikan inks for folks to try out, but some paper is an excellent idea. I have nothing special, though.

Glenn.

Great idea to bring "extra" ink Dr. Codfish! I have at least one bottle (of Edelstein ink no less) that I would be happy to trade or sell for less than cost to someone who would appreciate it more.

I'll be bringing all my flock in a brand new big leather case (the plain black kind with 24 slots: I don't have 24 Pelikans....yet), two of the beautiful leather Pelikan cases (the bright shiny ones with room for 2 pens, gorgeous!), paper, ink, and I don't know what else.

Oh, extra nib units. I have a LOT of extra nib units in plated and unplated stainless. Again, maybe someone wants to trade....

Going to Rochester and can not wait!

Last year at the Portland (OR) Hub (one of the biggies), I brought along strange Pelikans and their ink systems and merchandising materials, ads/blotters with matching pens, the first two Pelikanos and their ads and carry-cases (the rocket launcher), lapel pins, and a 500 rolled gold set with its packaging and merchandising. Our terrific Hub Meister had a table for me to set up a display. The only problem was that a few attendees wanted to buy the stuff.

Maybe I went overboard. I love show and tell. The appeal to me is not the depth of the pen collection by model per se but the relation to the moment in time (after all, I have a nice grouping of typewriter ribbons and merchandising materials aimed at secretaries).

I am now doing the 'moment in time' with two classic portable typewriters ... the Hermes Baby and the Olivetti Lettera 22.

Well, they are writing instruments.

Not a problem this year. I'll be at my granddaughter's wedding down the coast on Pelikan Hub Day.

In Cincinnati, I anticipated sharing some of my pens, but was blown away by another collection upon entering the door. 120 superb pens, over half of which were Pelikan. There were 8 or 9 Toledos! I spent so much time drooling over his collection. I so appreciated his allowing me to dip a number of them. An 850 wrote like a dream, and looked the part.

I enjoyed sampling Pelikan Edelstein inks, though I really only liked Tanzanite. I still took a sample of Aventurine, a shockingly bright green, and maybe one other. The others were generally too thin. I love deep color. I was disappointed in the gift bag of one bottle of Smokey Quartz, and a paper cup. Paper cup?

Still look forward to next year. Hope my new acquaintance returns with his collection, and with his vintage Pelikans this time.
