Thought I'd post my first year 51 with smooth sterling cap. I think these were rhodium plated or something, that eventually flaked off? Not sure if mine still has the plating or if it has completely worn away.

YOWSA! What a nib! Sure that's not multiple "B"s there? Because I have a Navy Gray Aero with supposedly has an OB nib....

Really a nice nib.How wet is it?

Well, I'm guessing the nib is at least 2B Left Oblique, pretty wet too and smooth. I can write fast without any issues. I'm using Pilot BB mixed with PR Electric Blue (kind of 90/10).

Edit: Sorry for sloppy hand writing, I had to focus on phone's camera and holding the pen too...

Hi, Folks,

A throwback photo from 2004

This is a Parker 51 probably customized in the 1950s by Brazilian goldsmith Celestino Praça from Rio de Janeiro. It’s a 5 ½ inch aerometric fountain pen with an engraved wave pattern on the cap and barrel. There is a cartouche on the barrel for personalization. The only markings on the pen are on the clip, stamped 18K (CP), possibly indicating that the cap, barrel and clip are 18 karat gold. There is a matching pencil.

Thanks!

Is that both Mustard and Buckskin? All four are very, very beautiful pens. Thanks for the photo.

Hi, Folks,

A throwback photo from 2004

This is a Parker 51 customized in the 1990s by Argentinian silversmith Sergio Kullock. It’s a 5 ½ inch aerometric fountain pen with an engraved wave pattern on the cap and barrel. There is a cartouche on the barrel for personalization. It’s marked "STERLING SILVER" and "SK" on the back of the cap lip.

Hi, Folks!

This is a Parker 51 Aerometric in Lustraloy and Navy Grey c. 1950s. It's 5 3/8 inches long capped. The stainless steel cap has the thin lip band and is stamped PARKER on the front and an imprint MADE IN U.S.A. "51" is stamped near the clutch ring on the barrel. The trim is chrome plated and the cap top jewel is pearlescent. These pens were advertised at $15.00 retail in 1953, $22.50 with the matching pencil.

My first “51” is an example of this same model - except that mine was ‘Made in England’.

Cosmetically, the only difference is that, along with the production-date code, “MADE IN ENGLAND” was engraved/stamped on the barrel, near the clutch ring.

When I got mine its barrel markings were still very faintly visible. Its date code was for the third quarter of 1954.

The markings were only visible under a loupe. They have now all worn away (I had to send it for repair, and they all got polished off).

I would have uploaded a photo of my pen, but this picture is lovely, and my own photo-fu is nowhere near as good as this.

Side note:

Before its launch date was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, an RRP in € was announced in Europe for the steel-nibbed versions of Parker’s new 51 (note the absence of quotation marks in that pen’s name).

After converting for inflation, it is pretty much the same as the 1953 USD price given above for this “51”.

Wow, a really nice pen+nib combination, one of my grails. Thanks for the video, and enjoy the pen.

Thanks.

I could see myself getting and using Yellowstone. Presuming of course that that price wasn't through the roof -- which means I don't expect to get one anytime soon.

Nassau Green and Buckskin? I'll pass.... Even if they were five bucks.

No you would not Ruth, you could then sell them to FarmBoy for $10 bucks. :)

:lticaptd:

You know, that's the same rationale that someone tried on me at my local pen club a couple of years ago, when I found what turned out to be a Cross Verve at an arts and crafts focus thrift store on the way to a meeting. I paid a buck for it, and that person offered me $2 for it. ;) I didn't know a lot about Cross pens, but the guy who runs the mailing list pulled out a tablet and looked it up -- and there was one in a different finish that was on eBay, IIRC, for over $100 US.... And I later found one in the same color as mine, but a different nib, for about TRIPLE that... (albeit from a vendor that I'm not allowed to name and shame, but which was the vendor with whom my one transaction that I had actually lead me to filing a dispute over -- and WON; so that lender is at the TOP of my "Do Not Buy From" list, even about the seller I refer to now as "that third-rate pawnbroker").

The $2 offer on the Verve didn't work on me either, BTW.... :P
