The pic shows my 142 piston assembly, when turning the piston knob CCV the telescopic tubes extend and turning CV retracts them, this system allows for a bigger ink capacity than a one stage piston system.

How about the 12, 22, 32 series? Slim, small, piston and cheaper than every other MB mentioned so far. Also pretty easy to maintain and clean.

If the requirement is slim and fine nib, these two-digit models are really great. They are not short like the 142, they are longer but not fatter like the 146. And their smaller nibs will allow you get a Fine that actually writes fine You should find a 3x for under $130, and a higher up in line with gold filed cap 72 would be about $160-180.

 

These pens have a beautiful design! And I really do enjoy writing with them!

Why did MB stop making this system? Is it too cumbersome and fussy to operate?

So, I am not the historic archive librarian for MB, but logic would tell me that the telescoping piston was a lot more complicated to make, cost more to make, cost nore to repair, and didn't earn a premium in sales revenue. The plastic worked well enough, was lighter, cheaper to make, cheaper to repair, and last time I checked MB prices have not gone backwards on their slow march to infinity.

 

To bad, they are far more elegant and robust.

Too bad! Seemed like a rather clever system to optimise ink capacity. From what I understand, modern pistons can't optimise the barrel space like the telescopic piston. So, it seems like we've taken a step back.
