Air Gap In Ink Between Tines Jowo #6

Hi,

 

As I was writing today I observed the ink was running lean. Using a loupe I looked at the nib between the tines and before my eyes an air gap between the tines appeared, the ink 'separated'. If you look at the image there is some ink at the tip of the nib, an air gap, then ink near the breather hole (too dark to see).

 

Would anyone know what the cause of this would be ? I've thought of possible reasons such as: feed running dry, nib and feed not mating, problem with nib causing capillary failure. Observing: there is still some moisture/ink between nib and feed, the nib and feed are properly touching (no gap); I'm open to other suggestions.

 

The nib is a generic JoWo #6, feed is common generic plastic, pen is cartridge/converter.

From your photo it looks as though the tip is joined together and needs separating. Is it's possible for you to cut through.it?

Hi, Is this a new pen? If the nib is making good contact with the feed, then I would be looking further up the feed channel for a blockage/ bits of plastic in the channel. If you can remove the feed, then you could run a piece of thin plastic sheet down the ink channel to make sure there are no 'issues' there.

If you don't want to take the feed/ nib apart, you could give the whole front section a soak in water with one drop of detergent mixed in, that might be enough (thinking of 'new pen' problems.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I solved the issue by swapping out the generic plastic feed with a spare genuine JoWo feed (because it's a JoWo nib); the tolerances are really tight and nib and feed make for a perfectly snug fit.

That might be the case, ink could be on the tip of the tines even if they are joined!

The tip of the tines aren't touching though it looks that way in the photo. That dark bit on the tip is the remnant of the ink. Normal 80gsm copy paper can pass through the tines.
