Mb Nib Exchange - What Is Going On?

Quite frankly, I cannot for the life of me see the reasoning behind the company's policies

I think it's a matter of conflicting goals (or intentions, or whatever): Montblanc is long ago that doesn't produce writing instruments. They sell "luxury" and it happens that some of the luxury they sell, eventually writes, almost as a side effect.

Now, re-read what you wrote under this light, and you'll see all pieces get in place.

I called MB Monday for an update, the 149 is awaiting its nib from Germany, so who knows how long that will be. I asked about my 1912 as well, after several minutes the concierge said he would have to do some further research and call me back. I'm thinking to myself that they lost my pen. That evening as I'm arriving home UPS pulls in, hands me a familiar looking package and says it needs a signature...it was my 1912. I don't know if MB is aware that I have it, oh well. I never did hear back from the concierge.

It appears to be writing better thus far, though I haven't spent much time with it yet. There is a mark on the body that I am 99% certain was not there when I sent it in, but at this point I am so tired of dealing with them I'm not going to pursue it.

I spoke too soon. Sat down today to do some serious writing with the 1912, it skips like crazy. I have a 244 and a WE both with OBBs that I can write with just fine, in addition I wrote with my 149 O3B with no problem, so I don't think it is me.

Are there recommendations for a nibmeister in the US I can send this to to actually get it writing? I am done dealing with Montblanc.

MikeItWork. Mike Masuyama works magic with nibs. I’m with you.

Thank you. I'm going to try to send it out this week. I called MB to let them know my displeasure, they suggested I send it back in. I told her I was done dealing with their service center, recounted all of my issues this year, and pointed out that they clearly don't know what they are doing. The response was something to the effect of I'm sorry you feel that way, followed by silence. It kills me because I love the brand and their pens, but the service is just so poor!

I’m entirely with you. See my post in another thread. I’m not about to buy additional Skeletons if they can’t handle routine maintenance on basic pens.

I feel your pain, and sorrow, and hope that you eventually get it working perfectly.

After playing with it a bit I'm pretty sure it is an issue with the feed. If I "prime" it and use the piston nob to get the ink flowing down into the nib, it will write just fine for a while.

That would be my guess from the symptoms.

That's a very disappointing response. Sorry to hear it.

Hope you get some satisfaction from your new course of action, but your experience leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

It doesn't bode well.

Good luck.

With defective plastic feeds, sometimes there is little a nib tech can do except seek a replacement and only MB has new spares.

I suggest you send the pen back yet again and specifically ask them for a new feeder.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Miracle!!! My JFK 1917 fountain pen with wrong box number is after all back with current box and new booklet, etc. :) 6 months but it is over now and the pen seems writing better as I asked to check the nib at the same time :notworthy1:

That's terrific good news!

It's great to know that it's writing better than ever.

Thank you for the photo showing your very nice JFK.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bringing this back to the top.

I'm happy to say on initial inspection and brief usage in now 2/2 on nib exchanges.

First my ultrablack from F to OM, which after about a month is setting in nicely.

Now, my Exupéry from M to OB. So far it's up to my expectations.

At long last I received my 149 last night. Upon visual inspection, everything seems fine. I intended to bring it with me to the office today to ink it up and write some but left it at home. Hopefully either this evening or tomorrow I can test it out.

The saga is finally over! To the naked eye everything looks great, I can tell they replaced my clip and possibly my cap, the piston feels different as well. Most importantly, the nib. This thing writes like a dream! 149 O3B inked with MB oyster gray. Even on a poor quality steno pad it looks amazing. Please forgive the terrible photo.
