Hello, new to FPN. Relatively new to FPs as well. Started using them about a year and a half ago and began to dive in. Still learning about all facets of the writing process, pen and nib feel, paper and ink differences, etc. I try to journal every day and keep about 4 pens inked at a time. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy, but she indulges. Looking forward to learning more.

Actually, there is much genius in the fountain pen. Without air behind the liquid in a container, the liquid will not flow through the "bottle neck". All those grooves, in the pen feed, are air vents that pass air into the ink reservoir, allowing ink to flow. As the vents fill with ink, the air supply to the reservoir is cut off, and ink flow stops. As writing uses the ink from the vents, air flow is restored.

The pen feed turns the ink supply "on" and "off", as needed, without moving parts.

Soooo, which fountain pen do you use for daily writing ? Which of your fountain pens has your wife "embraced" for her own ? (Don't be offended ! It's how I lost a Parker, a Sheaffer, and most of my T-shirts.)

Thank you all for the warm welcome. My first FP is a Lamy Safari (have two of them, one with a FP and another with a 1.5). Then bought a TWSBI 580 AL which I have inked with Diamine Red Dragon. Then bought a Waterman Slim black Exception (fine point). My current inked pens:

1)TWSBI 580 Al (Diamine Red Dragon)

2) Conklin Nighthawk (from Goulet) (Noodlers Black)

3) Lamy 2000 (aluminum) (Diamine Majestic Blue)

4) Visconti Opera Crystal Demonstrator (EF Noodlers Black) This is my favorite pen, hefty feel and a very compliant expressive nib.

 

My wife sort of understands my "disease". I have asked her to write with the different pens on different types of paper so she "feels" and "sees" the difference. She doesn't own an FP yet... we'll see.

My wife thinks I'm nuts too (and insists the pens "don't work" because she rotates them in her hand), but also indulges me since it's a *relatively* inexpensive hobby (as long as she successfully keeps me away from maki-e and Montblac).
