Stripped Threads

Recommended Posts

The threads connecting the two halves of my pilot vanishing point have started to strip and some brass has been scraped off the threads, I'm worried that the threads will continue the strip until the pen is no longer usable. The threads work fine and close properly now except that there is some brass showing where some paint has fallen off. Is this a common problem or covered under warranty? The pen is only a few weeks old and has mostly just been sitting on a desk and opened occasionally to check the ink level or refill. Thanks.

The only way to know for sure is to contact Pilot. They're nice people and won't send a possie out because you asked.

I just contacted them, and they just said to mail it to them so they could assess the damage. Since its just a minor issue and the threads still work, I don't think I will send it over unless it gets worse. I wonder if this is a common problem because the threads seem very thin and fragile, I haven't seen anyone else with this issue though.

Forgive me, but this does not make sense.

The pen is only a few weeks old, and one assumes is still under warranty. The pen has a flaw and you were concerned enough to post about it. Pilot has agreed to look at the pen. They may very well replace the pen or the flawed parts. Chances are that if you ask them to return the nib that is in the pen if they replace the barrel and cap they will. It may be a manufacturing flaw, and sending it to them may help with others if the problem appears on their pens. (for the record, this has never happened with any of the current production pens that I own)

Why then are we waiting to send it to them, perhaps until the warranty runs out?? Problems like this are why warranties and service departments exist.

FWIW. The coating on the threads is not paint. It's plating.

I think the OP should jump on Pilot's offer. Waiting might produce a different result, they might rescind their offer. Take the bird in the hand.

+1...don't wait. Send it in.

I think I will be sending it in then based on all the responses. To be honest, I didn't really want to send it in at first since it was such a great writer and is my only pen that isn't entry level. :)
