Sailor Chalana? Yay Or Nay

Hey y'all,

I've been thinking about getting a Sailor Chalana, as I've been able to find one from one of my friends. He's offering me a great price for it, as it's only been used once or twice and the box is a little damaged. I've been itching to get it, but I thought I'd come here for thoughts before my ...... hobby.... gets me into a situation I may not want to be in. I've also heard that the Chalana's are being discontinued?

Anywho... Sailor Chalana, Yay or Nay?

There is a thoughtful review here, if you haven't seen it already. The consensus seems to be that the Chalanas are beautiful pens and fine instruments, but just too small to write with. That may be a matter of modern practice, since they are no smaller than a lot of elegant 19th century dip pen holders, and people used those every day. Size is more about how you hold then pen and what you are expecting, really. If you are comfortable with very thin pens and realize that you shouldn't be pressing on or squeezing anything while you write, they you will probably love it. (I have some similar-sized Pilot Birdy pens, and I find them very enjoyable.)

Note that over the years there have been several versions of the Chalana at quite different price points, so be sure you understand which one you are being offered.

If you want one to fill a gap in your collection, go for it.

But as Ron said, there are MANY to choose from.
