I don't have anything in my collection that does "ruby". Black cherry is too dark and Plum is too purply for a ruby... ;)

MontBlanc Ruby Red or their rose-scented Love Letter ink (which is also ruby red)

or

Private Reserve Fiesta Red (more of a brick red)

The MahBlah RR & LL inks are hard to track down, but that can be half the fun :)

Happy hunting!

Tom

Please excuse my ignorance (and the off topic question), but what qualifies music as being goth? I was too old to be one by the time I learned about goths, but I have always thought that it was an interesting subculture.

Well, there's a fair amount of goth music I don't like. (What's that rule that 90% of anything is (bleep)?) I'm pretty old school -- I like Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure's older stuff... A lot of goths (myself included) are into the current EBM and synthpop artists, like Covenant, VNV Nation, and Wolfsheim. There's a huge amount of industrial crossover as well -- Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb are old favorites. And goths my age (thirties) tend to like 80's New Wave bands like Depeche Mode, because that's what we grew up on. And if you go to an "Old Wave" night at a goth club, you're likely to hear some 80's alternative like The Smiths as well as some 90's classics like Nine Inch Nails.

The bands I mentioned are the most well-known, and their stuff is easy to get hold of. There's tons of other good music out there if you're interested...

I love NIN; saw Nitzer Ebb perform at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival '06, and they weren't band. I like a bit of The Cure; not into much of the rest.

Sorr, OT...

Hmmm. I just had a thought. The Duke I want to buy -- this one -- has a ruby bit on the cap. So it would be really nifty to have ink that matches it. Any suggestions for a lovely ruby red?

(Yes, I still want Noodlers Nightshade, but I think I may fill my Lamy Vista with that until I can get one of those Laban spiderwebs. Damn, you people are bad for me... *grin*)

Noodler's Widowmaker Red!

How can you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

Off topic, but I'm very excited to see someone talk about EBM/Futurepop around here! I am a huge fan of VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Wolfsheim, De/Vision, and their ilk. In fact I'm listening to A23's new one right now. I never really thought of EBM as an extension of goth, but I guess it makes sense. I'm 25, so I grew up with NIN and Marylin Manson, but have in recent years found an appreciation for Joy Division, The Cure, and Sisters Of Mercy. I'm not a very good goth though... see my avatar? that is how my hair has looked my entire life. Actually I'm kind of a hippie too... and a punk rocker. and an old rock n roller. plus i love romantic classical. i also own way more miles davis CDs then i probably really NEED... derp, i just love music.

Anywho, looking at these pens makes me wish I would've hopped on that Krone sale at FPH. :headsmack:

Johnson: I'm a music nut, too -- everything from Bach to Johnny Cash to Simon & Garfunkel. What do you think of the new VNV album? There's a couple of tracks I like, but it's not going to be a favorite... And as far as the goth/EBM connection goes: go to a goth club on Saturday night and all they play is EBM, synthpop, and the more melodic industrial. Because you can't exactly dance to Miranda Sex Garden! And if you listen to lyrics, especially Covenant (my favorite modern band) and Wolfsheim, you can see the ties to goth. Dance music you can mope to! :)

Back to topic: very lightly rose-scented red ink would be awesome. But, like Ghost, I want to know how strong the scent is. Subtle is good. I can't stand strong perfumes.

I'll Google all these colors and see what shades they are. Or, at least, what shade they are on my monitor. Once again I wish that there was a pen store locally so I could look at inks in person... <_<

--- pause for Googling ---

What about PR Dakota Red? Too light? The pictures I've found of Noodler's Fox Red look nice too, kind of dried-blood-ish, and it's waterproof... Hmmmm.

How strong is the rose scent?
I have the J. Herbin rose-scented cartridges and they are very, very subtly scented and have a lovely true rose scent, not artificial or garish. James P. of Pear Tree Pens has written an enthusiastic review of the bottled version. (Yes, I looked strange sniffing the nib of my pen to make sure it was scented! But I think the bottled ink would be more detectable.) As noted, the scent is more for the writer than the recipient; it doesn't linger. The cartridge ink is also a pretty red, although I'm still searching for the perfect dark ruby. (That reminds me, I need to post a review of the Stipula Calamo Borgogna, once I get a scanner -- disappointing and a little too much of a pinkish cast).

that is all.

Lefty - thanks. I hate artificial or sickly sweet scents, so this now goes on my wish list.

Vermillion - stick with us and we'll take you places you never thought you'd go.

I'm starting to think my monitor lightens everything. The pictures I found of Caran d' Ache Sunset look blindingly magenta. I read a description of Noodlers Nightshade that says it's so dark it's almost black, yet in the photos I found it looks like a medium, slightly dark, purple. Several things described as "true red" look too light on my screen.... Sigh.

This is aggravating. I think I'll start going by description rather than pictures.

Caran d' Ache Sunset sounds pretty, but I can't seem to find it in stock anywhere. Suggestions?

Noodler's Widowmaker sounds good, too...

Are there any good red waterproof inks?

(Thanks to all of you for answering my questions. I really appreciate it.)

I really like Private Reserve Black Cherry. It is a reddish black. Caran d'Ache Sunset looks bright magenta when wet, but dries to a deeper hue - still bright, though.

This is how Black Cherry looks like in the Visconti Skeleton! Blood in bones. ;)

I am hoping to dig up a writing sample somewhere...

I have never agreed with a post more. I think that if it weren't for FPN, I'd probably stop buying pens (I always use the same few pens) but I always find convincing reasons to add to my "collection." Also, I enjoy chatting with 99% of the people I have met here.

Oh! I'm going to mention this here instead of starting another thread: the body of my Vanishing Point came in today's mail. Squee! I have the body, I have the ink, and the nib should arrive in a couple of days... *bounce*bounce* bounce*

Back on the subject of reds, I'm being sent a postcard written in Caran d'Ache Sunset. Cool, eh? Then I can see what the color actually looks like... I must admit though that Black Cherry is tempting me because it looks so darn blood-y. Yes, it's darker than the ruby in the pen, but I bet it looks really sweet on paper...

Looks almost black going on, dries to a lovely blood stain shade - think old bandages. It's bounced up into my favorites.

Trying to figure out if my new babies will get here before the weekend...

Congrats on being "almost"
