Thanks all; glad you enjoyed it. I just thought that it was such a special experience, I really ought to share.

 

I saw, and held, some of the new pens with hand-turned ebonite sections (about six in total). Ultimately, I decided against them, but only because they were urushi-only, and the woods used were not to my taste. It's worth asking - Motoshi speaks incredibly good English.

 

Thanks for the reply. I did end up emailing Motoshi but the ebonite sections are limited to the sizes he restricts to the models. For other members interested, "I use 11 mm diamiter for B.O. 12mm for Shirane and Kumoba."

For what it is worth, I would entirely agree with mongrelnomad's comments on comparing Stylo-Art to Hakase. This is in no sense to devalue Stylo-Art because each maker is making something specific. Having said this, Hakase is very much in a class of its own as indeed is Ohashido.

Thanks for sharing, what a beautiful write up. I've been lucky enough to have similar experiences abroad with one or two pen makers and repairers, and making the human connection always seems to enrich my enjoyment of the pen itself.
