Quick Fade Test

Hi all!

Exactly one month ago I made some fp ink and ball point (and a permanent marker) samples, which I cut into four strips, treating each one differently. No. 1 was taped to a southern window for 1 month, no. 2,3,4 were each soaked in their respective liquid for 30 seconds, dried and then put away in a dark place (together with the control strips). Here are the results (patron is a standard, no name cartridge I had lying around):

Thank you. That is interesting. :) I must get some P.I. Tsuki-yo. :D

Thanks! I just noticed I spelled Quink Blue wrong.... oops...

I found it interesting that some ball points performed worse in the UV test than some inks. I was not expecting that, as ball points are regarded as being quasi-permanent (or by any means at least more permanent that fountain pen inks...). It also looks like Tsuki-yo is by far the most resistant of the bunch.

As I'm not a fan of BP's I didn't really look at those. Sorry. :( I couldn't help but spot Faber Castell CX Blue though. :o

Ball points are the ones that fade most in my office. Only use them unless it's super necessary...

My granddad also pointed out that was the biggest downside when they changed from fountain pens to ball points when he was young and working as a clerk.

While always a bit interesting, but since no controls with known rates of fading were employed in this test, such as the Blue Wool scales which can be mapped to ASTM lightfastness ratings, the results do not meet any conclusion, other than if you put your writings in a south facing window, they'll fade.

This is sort of a given with fountain pen ink as the majority of them are not rated for any kind of permanence.

I always enjoy these kind of tests. While I do not expect inks to be permanent, it is interesting to see the differences. Thanks for posting this!

Thank you for sharing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
