Robert Oster Purple Jazz: A Horse Of A Different Color

So, the correct name is Purple Jazz, and I put it back in where I had "Robert Oster TBD"?

Good. I still like it on the basis of the latest images and descriptions.

The verdict is still out on whether my sample is truly Purple Jazz or not. Cyber6 has sent me a sample of what Purple Jazz should look like. We will do a side by side comparison. Also, I have asked Anderson Pens to look into it again. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this.

I have a sample from Vanness of Purple Soul -- haven't tried it but from looking at the ink swishing around in the vial I would say it was definitely similar to Claudia's scan of Purple Jazz. Whereas the ink in the original review looks a lot closer to something like the ink sloshing around the sample vial labeled as Blue Water Ice (which I also haven't yet tried, but picked up in June at the Triangle Pen Show from Federalist Pens).

I'll try to ink up a couple of pens in the next day or two (amidst the pre-Pennsic panic packing) and see what my inks actually look like.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Wow! Thank you so much Ruth. I would love to see your comparisons when you have time.

When I ordered my samples, I also got Blue Water Ice, which I absolutely love! Blue Water Ice is lighter and more turquoise. It is a really lovely shade, but nothing close to the "Purple Jazz" sample that I have.

Cyber 6 very kindly sent me a sample of her Robert Oster Purple Jazz. I then spent some time doing "side by side" testing. In each case, my sample acquired from Anderson Pens is on the LEFT, and the sample kindly provided by Cyber6 is on the RIGHT.

Before we look at the testing, let me preface with this:

  • Both a Nikon D810 camera, 36MP, fully color calibrated, and an HP LaserJet 200 color MFP (printer/copier/scanner) were used. I also used a Fujitsu Scansnap scanner for comparison. No change was noted, so those results are not shown.
  • Both my laptop monitor (HP 360 with enhanced display) and my second monitor (Dell 28") were calibrated to optimal specifications using Spyder Pro monitor calibrator.
  • For all samples, the same pen was used for consistency - a Jinhao 450 with customized stub nib (customized by IanTheJock - thank you, Ian!) This pen loves this ink.
  • Papers used: Tomoe River, Cambridge Premium Spiral Bound Notebook paper, and HP ColorLoc Copier paper. Also Arches Watercolor paper

My results: I found little to no difference between the two inks. Both samples are the same ink. They have the same wonderful flow, dry times are the same, both have lovely shading and great sheen, and are fairly water resistant. This ink is marvelous and a pleasure to write with.

Also, the color is the same. On some papers, the purple tint is more apparent. On other papers - i.e. copier paper - the blue-green-gray tint is more apparent.

I will leave you to judge for yourself.

From my perspective, regardless of what it is called, it is a keeper! I am not super wild about the way the color varies from paper to paper, but I love how it behaves, the shading and the sheen. This is on my list for my next ink purchase!

Thanks to everyone for this effort. I'm glad I didn't make the mistake of ordering this ink on the basis of a swatch.

You are very welcome. But, even though the color appears to vary with paper, it is a great ink!

  • 3 years later...

Very odd...it's blue, but called "Purple jazz"?
Meh...probably something to do with the paper...My "Sailor - Manyo Nekoyanagi" does the same thing.
On Rhodia it's a pale blue like Manyo Haha...but on regular copy paper and everything/anything else it's the proper pale purple color.
🤷‍♂️

This phenomenon seems to occur with several of the Oster Purples.  I make heavy use of a planner that contains Tomoe River paper; in my planner, Purple Rock turns an ugly green, and Barossa Grape is blue black.  I have also used Purple Rock, as a more attractive forest green, on seasonal gift tags.

Having found that both inks retain their purple color on some other papers, for example Fabriano Ecoqua and Cosmo Air Light, I've decided to spare myself chagrin by not using the Oster purples in my planner.
