Hello to all on the FPN,

 

I've been collecting fountain pens for some time but got into it more so since retiring recently. I have often visited the FPN to read the interesting posts when I see one close to my own interests. I have mostly collected Parker and Sheaffer FPs but recently started to buy a few Pilot pens. I probably spend way too much so I've decided to limit the number I buy and restrict myself to some more obscure pens. Besides I have most of the Parker and Sheaffer pens I want for now and most Pilots I want are far too expensive to justify but I keep looking just in case.

 

I recently bought an old pen which I would like any comments and advice on if anyone knows anything...

 

So I picked up a French made UNIC fountain pen with a gold nib and unusual filling mechanism. It has what is probably a celluloid body in a lovely white marbled pattern, a removable cap at the rear under which is a transparent pump button. Inside, the sac is a bellows shaped rubber item a lot like a small flexi hose. The button compresses this and draws up ink, you can see it's full through the button. There is a breather tube extending just into the button. It fills easily and writes very nicely, although it is now cleaned and put away safely.

 

I will post a photo if anyone would like a look, just let me know.

 

I'll watch this space to see what happens.

hi and welcome from me too - always good to have another Brit. on board. Regret I know nothing of French Unic pens, think they were possibly part of Stylomine at one time, but we have people here who am sure will know lots. Do know that the French nibs on earlier pens were 18 carat unlike 14 for the U.K. Yes, pix are very important - look forward to seeing your pen.

Being new here I'm not quite sure where and how I should add photographs. Apologies in advance for any mess.

 

The pen is just 4.75 inches long and 7/16" at the widest, so quite small.

 

 

Nib is 18 carat in good condition with plenty of tipping left. In fact the whole pen looks to have had little use.

 

 

Here you can see the filling mechanism, quite simple I had to re-fix the button with shellac but still in working order. My only thoughts for a replacement are maybe a bike cable rubber boot, if I could find one the right size.

 

 

The button is clear so you can see perfectly when it's full of ink. You can see end of the breather tube just at the bottom of the button.

 

 

The cap has three bands, the outer two are gold filled the inner one is silver, clip is gold filled. A couple of tiny cracks and small chip but I won't let that worry me overly. Not being sure of the plastic type, I don't think I'll experiment.

 

 

The button cover finishes of the back with a nice tapered shape and a silver tassie.

 

 

 

Whew ... finally got there after some to-ing and fro-ing

I hope you like these pictures, they were all taken on my new endoscope which can get in quite close for detail pictures, I hope they look OK if not I'll post some taken with my DSLR when I charge it.

Thanks for the photographs. I would wager that there is, withing the membership, someone who has experience with this "obscure" pen. It would be wonderful to have this one restored to service.
