Oh lucky you. Mine was quite stingy on ink flow so I had to get the BB nib's tines opened up with some shims, and be careful with the choice of ink. The ink I ended up using with it was Noodler's Rome Burning (super gusher) so it did flow pretty well in the end, but the tiny refilled cartridge was gone after a few pages so wasn't all that practical, but fun nonetheless. :D

Of course your are right. The good side is that chosing a pen for long session is a simple process: I've two B+ nibs (could make it three of I put that 18k B Lamy 2000 in my 2000 steel). But seriously, this Waterman nib is just awesome, and I am lucky enough to experience absolutely no flow trouble even if I do write quote quickly.

Thanks to all for so many great contributions. I have been keeping tabs on the thread and enjoying everyone's broad nibs. I am finally ready to post a few more on my own recent discoveries.

This nib came in the post literally today, maybe 30 minutes ago. I had to rush to get it onto one of my pens that had a serviceable, but bland B nib. Such fine celluloid deserves a special nib...

I found this nib on Pendleton's ebay store on another Bexley Prometheus. I was charming (maybe) and earnest about broad nibs, so he agreed to sell me just the nib. I think it is a suitable fit for such a large pen.

I have not had time to fall in love with it. This nib is like an Italian sports car from the 1960s. You cannot just hop in and expect to go fast without crashing. I will have to learn the nib, find the sweet spot and figure out how to push it to its potential. I do love the significant line variation I can achieve.

And yes, it is 1.93 MM according to his calipers. A standard Bexley S nib is about 1.3MM. :D ;)

Beautiful celluloid pen, too.

Thank you for posting it here, on this delightful thread.

This thread has so many yummy eye candies! I've really enjoyed looking through them all. I have a foot definitely on the broad side for writing, although I love my extra extra fines for drawing still. My favourites have been oblique broad nibs but I will happily take any juicy wet broad ones. :P

These are the photos I took today for another thread but I thought they would fit in here as well.

I am back into the mix with a recent acquisition. This pen is a bit of a mutt. When Tibaldi (version 2) died off, the unfinished pens and celluloid were sold off. (That is how the Bexley I posted recently came to exist.) At some point in the past somoen got a Tibaldi Impero body and shoved an Omas nib into the pen. The nib was originally an OM, but was gound to a fairly broad stub.

fpn_1504220703__omas_tibaldi_rear.jpg

And the pen itself...

fpn_1504220746__20170822_153334_resized_

What's interesting to me about the nib is that it writes pretty well with the typical orientation for a stub, maybe a little feedback. But, there is an oblique angle that still exists that is very smooth. So I am not sure if that is a "ghost oblique" still living in the nib or just some funky grinding. Either way, more character.

It is the oblique's true nature still shining through. It may be dressed in a stub's clothing, but it remains an oblique at heart. Don't fight the nib. It will serve you well.

  • 2 weeks later...

A new toy was fetched from the MB boutique yesterday. A dull, wimpy pen was sent off to boarding school and returned from an overly long and arduous adventure ready to fight for my affections. Time will tell, but this one does lay down a nice line.

Dumbfounded to see such monstrous nibs. If P51 nibs count I have just inked two of my broadest nibbed P51s. And the strange thing, well to me, is that the broadest of the two nibs is a USA made. I have never seen such a monster nib on a US made 51. The other one is a English nib on a English 51. This English nib is a double broad stub. I like using both the nibs. It is a real joy to write with these nibs. Both are pretty wet.

A broad line is a broad line, no matter where it comes from (ok, no finger painting sample here please). I'd love to see some photos and a writing sample while still inked.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Somewhat confusing and off-putting ones, as said to me by my very honest friends. I don't have an X account though :<

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?
