Tom, you’ll want to look up:

Eagle

Condor

Cross

Fude

All specialty nibs. I’d still own an eagle and cross if they’d been on larger pens.

Thank you.

All of these are unfamiliar to me.

Thank you for the above mention of a Zoom nib.

It's the first time that I've ever encountered the term.

Because of your post, I've added another nib variety to my mental set of nib possibilities.

Tom K.

First of all I would like to thank you for all the wonderful photos you have posted on this & other threads.

Tom, if you want to try out Zoom style nibs, I'd suggest you try them out first on Sailor's 14C versions, as can be found on the Sailor 1911M or the Pro-Gear Slim pens. These Sailors are well made, mid-range pens, though not quite in the same class of instruments as you usually photograph. If you do not find a Zoom to your liking, there is then little lost.

In my experience, the Zoom nib turned out to be not to my liking. I struggled for weeks to make the nib work for me. This nib just did not seem to suit my Western cursive script. I heard from other users that the Zoom is designed primarily for writing kanji.

One advantage of this unusual nib is that it has tons of tipping material available for customization. I asked Mr. Masuyama to turn my Zoom into a 0.8 mm. cursive italic. What a difference!

Tom: have a go here for a start. :)

Thank you so much for the very helpful link.

As is the case with thousands of “foreign” Web sites, it’s blocked in the area where I work, therefore I was initially unable to see it.

A kind friend overseas made screenshots for me.

What a useful guide to understanding various possibilities for nibs.

There's much to learn, as my experience heretofore has been limited.

Thank you so much for this helpful information.

There's a certain challenge as fountain pens made in Japan aren't widely offered in the area where I work and live.

Nevertheless I'll discreetly ask around. I appreciate your taking time to explain your Zoom nib experience to me.

As I do write Asian characters, a Zoom lens has a certain appeal.

Heretofore I've written with semi-flex EF or EEF nibs, which have produced lines with varied width where needed.

To my delight, the four OBBB nibs I use do write characters well, if the the nib is ever-so-slightly turned.

The 0.8 mm cursive italic sounds delightful. Lately I've been mulling over the possibility of a moderately wide cursive italic.

That's on my “possibly later in 2018” list of pen activities.

Thank you for the photograph of the Montblanc Donation Pen Johannes Brahms.

It's come to my attention lately due to the five cap bands, which is an attractive touch.

I like your calligraphy above, for the striking lettering.

My first broad nib, a Faber-Castell Loom Piano.

I see hard starts sometimes, approximately 40% of the time. Is this normal for broad nibs? I guess the smoother the paper, the more often I should see hard starts, right?

Well, hard starts or not, I love my first broad and I've ordered a Jinhao X750 with a fude nib.

The Zoom nib is one of my favorite nibs!!! I never thought I would use it for more than Christmas cards but I'm using it for daily writing now.

Thanks for bringing this up! I had only used my Realo 1911 Zoom with iroshizuku ink that was too wet for it. It made me thing the nib was just a blob. After your post I filled it up with some Robert Oster Blue Water Ice and like the nib much better now! It has nice shading and a little less of a blob looking for an italic regrind.

Now it's in the rotation ;)
