Organizing Color Cards

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if people arrange their color cards (everyone keeps cards of their inks, right? ;) ) by hue, by manufacturer, in alphabetical order, or... ?

I try my best to keep some type of order based on hue, and I try to keep them in a sort of sequence that leads —as seamlessly as possible— in a progression of color. So I have quirks, OK? :)

Do other FPNers out there do something similar?

Here is the sequence of warm colors. Sorry about the weird focus —I was trying out a fisheye lens for my iPhone...

I have 3 lots of swatches.

2 lots are ring-based (Mnemosyne) cards: 4 sets in the U.K. (organised alphabetically by brand/colour name, with 1 set just being Sailor) and 2 sets in Aus, but organised by hue, very similar to yours. The other set (in U.K.) is on 3" x 3" artist cards, organised by colour hue in 2 albums/binders fitted with transparent plastic pockets made for the cards, 6 per page/sheet, double-sided.

I was too busy looking over the cards to answer right away. No, I don't have cards. I do have an ink journal, that I sort by color. I do not separate by manufacturer. I have run out of room for some of the colors. I didn't realize when I started it how many samples I would eventually get. I also write in two separate journals with all of the samples I get in. One is more of a tester, the other is just to talk about my thoughts on that color and behavior etc...

Hi Halloween,

I sort mine by color... or by hue if I'm trying to sound sophisticated ;) :D ... from light to dark.

And don't think it isn't a PITA sometimes, trying to decide which square is lighter or darker from another. :gaah:

Sounds wonderful! I'd love to see images of your arrangement!

Sounds lovely. If you feel like sharing some of the entries in your journals, that would be great. I enjoy seeing other people's impressions on inks.

I struggle not only with lighter and darker, but also with the "sequence" of moving from, for example, yellow to brown to orange *OR* yellow to brown to red. It's like a garden of forking paths, you know?

That is a great set of cards HJB. :) Are they Mnemosyne cards or have you found a good replacement? :)

The cards I have have a clasp metal ring, and they're called "Col-O-Ring" cards, with good quality watercolor (?) paper. You can add and move cards around. Wonderful for arranging growing collections of inks!! :)

I wrote impressions on a Habana notebook. It isn't white paper. I have already filled one book, and I've started on another. I can't scan them, there are too many entries. Would you want to know about a certain ink by chance? If so I might be able to put up a picture or two. (if I have that ink, or sampled it)

The "Col-O-Ring" cards are designed & produced by Ana Reinert, of the Well-Appointed Desk & sold on her site, besides other retailers. She uses "100lb/160gsm European paper from a 400 year old mill." She selected the paper & they "are printed, assembled & designed in Kansas City. Paper was sourced from a local distributor."

Hi Halloween, et al,

I know EXACTLY what you mean and if my brain wasn't still up in bed sleeping; I'd cite a few examples.

Thank you. That is well worth knowing. :)

I believe that Anderson's have started selling cards, and they may even be these ones. I must investigate further. :)

Ooooh. Very nice. I was just trying to decide between Diamine Ancient Copper and Deep Dark Orange. And there they are side-by-side. Thankyou!

My swatches are in colour groups for ease of comparison too (but I use business card blanks and store them in one of those little books with plastic pockets).

Will work for pens...

Good system. I never thought of that!

I organise my splash cards (Maruman Mnemosyne word cards) by brand and name, alphabetically. I find it too difficult to sort by colour, and sorting them alphabetically makes it easier for me to locate a certain ink. I can always pull them out and compare side by side.

My Maruman cards are running out. Anyone knows whether the Col-o-rings are available at any European stockists? The shipping from US is too high...
