Hand Carved Oblique Holder In Spalted Maple

Beauty through Adversity - This thought kept echoing in my mind as I was carving this holder. Just like a hardship caused this Maple to become so uniquely beautiful, we too become stronger, better and uniquely beautiful through adversity.

This holder celebrates the beauty in all of us as we face life's trials and tribulations. It is available in my online store along with a couple of others :-)

Thank you GP - the Bloodwood and Curly Maple combination is quite brilliant. I have paired these two woods in another design too and it came out quite nicely too.

amk - I loved your post about carving your holder and how the design evolved. It is awesome to know you are carving your own holders. Have you carved any after the 'fishtail' holder?

Thank you for the kind words yeepers :-)

There's something so satisfying about the beautiful wood combinations combined with balance and a design that's perfection in the hand.

Salman, I've been trying a little turning recently on some fresh thuya that the neighbours cut down, and I've got a couple of plumwood carved holders I'm working on - but the plum is very dry and the work is very slow. So between waiting for the green wood to dry, and going slowly on the dry wood, nothing finished yet, but I promise to post when I have something to show.

Thanks for the compliments btw!

Too many pens, too little time!

Well said GP - I just love how the carving slowly takes shape and the beauty of the wood shows through. It is very satisfying indeed.

Thuya is a tricky one to work. I have some Thuya burl that is very oily and still hard to work after spending some time in the oven. I have a couple of pieced set aside but will only tackle them after another session in the oven to get rid of some more oils. I went easy the first time for fear of cracking the wood but it still clogs up sandpaper in about 5 strokes :-)

I will be looking forward to seeing more of your carving.
