Your Favorite Japanese Inks?

Hello FPN.

My first post here, and a bit of a crosspost from /r/fountainpens, but I figured I would tap your infinite wisdom while I can!

I'm currently in Japan, and have picked up quite a few inks so far:

  • Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo
  • Bung Box Sapphire "First Love"
  • Bung Box Kabayaki Hamanako Eel
  • Custom Green Sailor ink for Morita Pen Shop in Osaka
  • Sailor Maruzen Eternal Blue
  • KWZ Ink IG Turquoise
  • Kobe Ink #6 Bordeaux
  • Kobe Ink #44 Seaside Home
  • Sailor Jently Yama-Dori

ANYWAYS, while my wallet is crying no, my fountain pens are crying yes, so I'm turning to you guys: If you were in Japan right now, what inks(obviously ones that I haven't gotten yet) would you get/recommend. Would love to hear your guy's opinions!

Side note, Iroshizuku is so(relatively) crazy cheap here! Like $14 a bottle.

Store exclusives...bung box and the like.

Bungbox Sapphire and Eel, as well as the Maruzen Eternal Blue, and Morita Pen Shop Green are all store exclusives. Even Kobe inks are kinda a store exclusive.

I was more requesting specific ink names, or other hidden brands that I hadn't listed :/

I have really liked the Kyonooto inks.

The reason I mentioned them add a group instead of cookies is because they are stupid expensive out of country and sometimes near unobtainium in status.

Kyo-iro Soft Snow of Ohara is my favorite ink, but one can now get it online from various shops. While in Japan, you might as well look for inks that are not available elsewhere.

Ku jaku from Iroshizuku is my current favorite... just love the way it looks in the bottle and on the page.

The Kingdom Note inks by Sailor are really awesome store exclusives. Their bird line has a couple really spectacular blues and the purple jellyfish is also a favorite.

  • 3 weeks later...

Since my daily writing are mostly done with a F or EF nib I have my preference towards darker hue and good flow in an ink, I like Sailor Jentle seasons series

I ended up back on this thread and noticed something new. KWZ is great stuff, but it's a Polish ink, not Japanese. But I compliment you on your taste. This is my favorite Turquoise ink.

I would definitely say get one of those store-specific specialty ink made by Sailor - especially the ones that come in the old vase-like glass bottles. Those bottles are tough to come by nowadays.

As for specialty inks, they really have a lot of choices - even relatively less well-known local stores in other parts of Japan.

+1 I love pilot Iroshizuku inks but they are easy to get off Amazon these days for a good price. I would really search for the store exclusive Sailor inks in the old style bottles.

You went all the way to Japan for Yama-dori?

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.
